Quote of the Day:
Told my class I’d grade their previous unit essays in order of who was most focused during class today. One kid whispered, “I read the last page of ‘Of Mice and Men’. Grade mine first or I spoil it.” He left class with the first graded essay & a Jolly Rancher 😂

How do you open the door to brave question-asking?
Here's T John Scali's answer:

ALT "I like asking, 'What questions do you think someone else would have about this topic?' It takes the pressure off of students to save face in front of their peers and gets more questions asked about things students were confused about. It’s a small change that has made a big difference in my classroom!" —Teacher John Scali

Here's how educators Ashley Taplin, Rebekah Kmieciak and Carrie Edmond offer them the language they need:

ALT Graphic titled "Explicit Dialogue for Social Emotional Learning" includes SEL categories (e.g., self-awareness, self-management, etc.), each with a model explanation for students (e.g, "We're doing this check-in as a way for you and me to be aware of your energy level before beginning today's lesson," etc.).

One of my favorite lessons of the year… shaving cream cursive! Students had a blast while practicing cursive and perfecting their unique signatures.
