Folks, now that you don’t need a code to join Bluesky, I’m switching to doing most of my posting there at msoma.bsky.social. I’ll still be on X and Mastodon, just much less regularly. Hope to see you all there!

Excited to announce my forthcoming article at @socprobsjournal on what happens to White people displaced from gentrified neighborhoods. TL;DR: they are demographically similar to non-White displacees but end up in better neighborhoods tinyurl.com/2h9ckznn

Have you ever wondered where ZIP codes come from, and why they matter? I had a fun chat with @RachelStewart04 about this for an episode of her awesome podcast, Don't Drink the Milk. Check it out! pod.link/1704462801/episode/… @uicsoc @ComUrbASA @UAAnews @theAAG
Who knew the ZIP code was so fascinating?! History, culture, pride, politics, discrimination, privacy… and some excellent music 🎶 Unpack it all with us in the latest podcast episode: pod.link/1704462801/episode/… #dontdrinkthemilk

White and non-White displacees are similarly renters, single, etc. But, White displacees are richer and leave wealthier neighborhoods. On average, their *destination* neighborhoods are richer than the *origin* neighborhoods of non-White displacees.

Displacement is jointly an issue of race *and* class. Arguments that reduce displacees to non-White people or poor people are overly simplistic, at least in the U.S. context.

Findings suggest that scholars have underexamined the strategies that real estate actors use to persuade homeseekers to live in diverse neighborhoods. Also, security rhetoric may encourage homeseekers’ fears of mixed-income settings and impede cross-class social integration.

Published in the latest issue of the Journal of Homosexuality! My attempt to ensure that people accurately understand the impact of AIDS on queer geography, history, and social movements. @ComUrbASA @AsaSexualities
Reflecting on the AIDS crisis, the work of activist orgs in large cities, like ACT UP, may come to mind. So would it surprise you that AIDS inspired more queer orgs to be founded outside of, not within, large cities? See my latest article to learn why. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.… 🧵

If you're at #PAA2024 on Friday at 8am, come see my talk on what happens to White residents displaced from gentrified neighborhoods. Their experience speaks volumes about how gentrification works as a social process and how it harms existing residents.

Hello, #soctwitter! After a much-needed, self-imposed social media break, I’m ready to dive in again. What is the social media platform du jour for sociologists these days? Bluesky? Threads? Mastodon? Or is there just no more #soctwitter anymore?
