Right after winning her opening match at the WTA 500 tournament in Singapore, Ukrainian tennis player Oleksandra Oliynykova used her post-match interview to draw attention to the humanitarian catastrophe in Oleshky, a Ukrainian city temporarily occupied by Russia.
“Please, Google about Oleshky,” she told the audience.
Around 2,000 people, including around 50 children, remain in Oleshky under Russian occupation. The city has no electricity or gas, while residents face severe shortages of food, medicine, and other essentials.
Ukraine and international humanitarian organisations are ready to provide life-saving assistance and help evacuate civilians. But Russia continues to block these efforts – and every day without humanitarian access puts more lives at risk.
