When the Rutherford Cancer Centre network was still open, we offered our services on a not-for-profit basis to the NHS and Conservative Government. The offer was refused, with no proper reason given. Our extra capacity could have been utilised to clear the brutal lockdown backlog, and thousands of cancer patients would have had access to world-class treatment/diagnosis. Whilst cancer patients endured horrific delays, we had staff and machines sitting idle. The offer of services included MRI and CT scans, ultrasound services, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and proton beam therapy. To this day, I have no idea why they said no. Here was a ready-made solution that could have been deployed overnight, helping cancer patients immediately. We had the capacity and staff to help, and we offered our assistance on an entirely not-for-profit basis. That was refused. I cannot understand the reasons behind it, and sadly that decision has cost lives.
