🚨 Wayne Rooney on Diego Gomez extraordinary halfway-line goal against Crystal Palace: “I saw it and the first thing I thought was, ‘Well, that’s another one for the collection.’ Then somebody reminded me it was the longest goal in the Premier League since mine against West Ham. I said, ‘You could have let me enjoy that record a little longer.’ But what a goal. People will talk about the distance, 51 metres, and of course that’s incredible. For me, it’s the decision he makes before he hits it. You have to look up. You have to see where the goalkeeper is. And then, in a split second, you have to believe you can put the ball over him from that far away. Most players see the keeper off his line and still play a five-yard pass. It’s the sensible thing to do. Diego looked at the same situation and thought, ‘No, I fancy this.’ And it’s not just a hopeful kick. Watch how cleanly he strikes it. He gets the height, he gets the distance, and the ball is still coming down towards the goal. That’s the difficult part. If you hit it too hard, it goes over. If you try to guide it, the keeper gets back. Everything has to come together in one touch. I remember scoring mine for Everton. The funny thing about those goals is that everybody asks whether you meant it. I always think, ‘What did you think I was trying to do, cross it to someone in the car park?’ Of course you mean it. Whether you could do it again tomorrow is a different question. What I loved was the reaction of his teammates. You can see players almost struggling to believe what they’ve just watched. And when you’re on the pitch, that’s the best feeling. Your own teammates have seen you score hundreds of goals in training, but you do something like that in a match and suddenly they’re looking at you as if they’ve never met you before. And I think there’s something fitting about Brighton scoring a goal like this. Look at the football they’ve been playing. They beat Arsenal 3–0, they’ve been scoring goals for fun, and they don’t seem frightened of anybody. They play with freedom. They give young players the confidence to try things. You cannot tell a player to be brave every week and then complain when he tries something ambitious. Sometimes the ball ends up in the stand and everybody groans. Sometimes it ends up in the top corner from the halfway line and we’re all talking about it for years. People are already calling it goal of the season. I wouldn’t argue with them. There’ll be some wonderful goals between now and May, but someone is going to have to do something very special to beat that. And if Diego wants some advice from somebody who’s scored one from that distance, I’d tell him to enjoy every replay. Because the goalkeeper certainly won’t.”

A phenomenal performance in Croatia 👏

🚨Jorge Jesus on Cristiano Ronaldo’s role for Portugal against Denmark: 🗣️ Jorge Jesus: “I respect Cristiano Ronaldo enormously, but respect does not mean he has to be the main character every time Portugal plays. Cristiano is 41 now. He is not the same player he was at 25, 28 or even 32, and pretending otherwise would be unfair to him and unfair to the team. I didn’t call him up because I believe Portugal must play every match around him. I called him because he still has experience, personality and a level of leadership that can be valuable to this group. “But against Denmark, if I need players to press for 90 minutes, run behind the defence, recover the ball and constantly change positions, I will choose the players who can give me that today. I am not going to put Cristiano on the pitch simply because his name is Ronaldo. That would be managing the reputation of a player rather than managing the national team. If I need him for 20 minutes, he plays 20. If I need him for 30, he plays 30. And if I don’t need him, he can sit beside me and help the younger players understand what it means to represent Portugal. “Cristiano has already had his time as the player everyone had to build around. He doesn’t need me to pretend otherwise. His greatest contribution now may not be scoring the winning goal or playing every minute. It may be walking into that dressing room, looking at the younger players and telling them what he learned after 20 years at the highest level. That is leadership too. I want him to understand that being important doesn’t always mean being on the pitch. “And I know some people will be angry because they hear ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ and immediately think he must play. But I cannot select a player because of his history. I select him because of what he can give me today. Cristiano gave Portugal extraordinary moments, but those moments belong to the past. Against Denmark, I need to win the match in the present. If that means Cristiano starts, he starts. If it means he sits, he sits. Portugal owes Cristiano respect, but Portugal owes the team the truth.”

🚨🎙️ Jürgen Klopp on Messi leading the Ballon d’Or race at 39: Reporter: “Jürgen, Lionel Messi is currently leading the Ballon d’Or race according to many of the latest odds. What’s your take on that?” “Honestly, it’s not a coincidence that so many legends want Messi to win it. These are people who understand this game, people with years of experience at the highest level. “If you remove the bias and look at football with a normal understanding, you’ll have to accept there’s no other candidate who deserves the Ballon d’Or more than Lionel Messi. “He didn’t just carry his club side; he carried an entire team, leading them to a World Cup final at 39 while the whole world was watching. “He might not have been crowned the best player of the tournament, but everyone knows who was making the headlines game after game with those unbelievable performances. “When you understand football, you don’t need to be convinced. Messi’s football speaks for itself.”
