Venice patina is unlike any other - the entire city beaten and battered by water, salt and wind into a glorious meld

love poetry that’s really about God (clichéd, predictable) vs theology that’s really about her (groundbreaking)

Plato says the body (sōma) is a sign (sēma), which also means tomb, thus the body is a signifier to the soul just as a person-dead is signified by a tomb; and Baudrillard says, however, in Symbolic Exchange and Death that in his era that the whole of body is a graveyard of signs.

bouguereau's work is some of the most reactionary academicist painting out there, so bland and unadventurous, but god i love him.
a great example of the effect photography had on other mediums. quattrocento italian painting may have "discovered" perspective (at the same time the world was starting to be carved up into discrete regions + the new bourgeois "subject"). but you can point cameras *upwards*!
