Very excited to share that part of my PhD work is now out in @SciImmunology! There we show how modulation of asymmetric cell division can boost CD8 T cell memory. #immunology #memory #ACD #Tcells immunology.sciencemag.org/co…

Just climbed some steps to warm up for the #KSMitochondria25 in Taipei. First time in Asia, first time I will talk in a @KeystoneSymp, all very exciting!
It was not a straightforward path, but it is happening: I am officially an Assistant Professor-to-be! 🎉 I am thrilled to announce that was awarded a @snsf_ch Starting Grant and will start my lab next year. Very grateful to all those that supported me over the last years 👇 (1/4)
.@snsf_ch awards Starting Grants to outstanding young researchers in Switzerland. This year, five of the successful researchers plan to carry out their projects at the University of Basel.

I was so lucky to have such wonderful women as supervisors. Also have to mention the support from @MichaelLDustin, who allowed me to be an honorary member of his lab. And last but not least, @ImmunologyKing for being the most lovely mentor and @UniBasel for believing in me. (3/4)
This will likely be one of my last posts here. If you want to know more about how we plan to understand the reciprocal relationship linking organelle ageing, T cell fate decisions and organismal ageing, find me where skies are bluer: nanaborsa.bsky.social (4/4)
Had a great time talking about T cell ageing during the #ECI2024 Pint of Immunology. Big thanks to the organizers @pintofscienceIE and all those who engaged and made the discussion so interesting. #autophagy #DamAge @aksimonlab

What does autophagy degrade to maintain a healthy immune cell? Katja and other leaders in the autophagy field discuss this and other questions they believe are key for us to deepen our understanding of this fundamental cellular mechanism. @NatureCellBio nature.com/articles/s41556-0…
I have experienced both sides as a Brazilian that got a "global north" passport after immigration: I can still remember how it felt weird to be the same person, but suddenly have access to so much privilege because of a piece of paper.
Many people have no idea how these things work.
For example, right now, as a Brazilian, I can't accept invitations to speak at conferences in Europe because my visa to work in the U.S. has expired.
I am not illegal; I have a work contract with the University of California until 2027. Still, I must travel outside the U.S. and get a visa stamp on my passport to allow me to move freely to talk about science.
I have to do this every single year I stay in the U.S. The costs of the visa, traveling, time lost, etc, are all on me. Not every international scientist can handle this.
The #embosignaling24 in Venice was a blast: learned so much and met such amazing and generous peers! Big thanks to the organisers and very honoured to receive this prize.
#embosignaling24 Congratulations to all poster prize winners! Sponsored by @emboreports @NatImmunol @NatureMicrobiol @DMM_Journal @Co_Biologists
And this was also my first ever thread, but X is definetely not Twitter anymore: all came up a bit out of order. Things start here and here is also the link for the preprint. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
At some point I believe preprints were meant to allow some feedback from the scientific community - beyond the traditional peer-revision. So please share and get in touch with any ideas and suggestions!
Big thanks to the @aksimonlab crew and everyone that helped this work to move forward in sometimes challenging times. @avlecvie @K1_joo @YavuzYaziciogl1 @ewoudcompeer @CleeteRichter @MichaelLDustin @PekkaKatajisto @LindaVSinclair @LabDac
So we used CD8 T cells that maintain or clear old mitochondria in adoptive transfer experiments and voilà: we see that asymmetric inheritance of a pre-mitotic cell fate determinant indeed matters for cell fate! But what do old mitochondria do to the T cell?
Ok, bringing this profile back to life because:
1. I just pressed the submit button of a grant application.
2. My first ever preprint is online since less than 24h ago.
👇
Inheritance of old mitochondria controls early CD8+ T cell fate commitment and is regulated by autophagy biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor… #biorxiv_cellbio
But hey, #mitochondria are big players in T cell #metabolism and fate, and now we could use a real cell fate determinant as our asymmetry readout - even if this would rely on the synergy between asymmetric cell division and autophagy.
Of course, things were not straightforward. Old mitochondria are asymmetrically inherited, but what about #mitophagy? We looked at both mechanisms separately and I can tell you: both segregation and degradation play a role in the rise of T cells devoid of old organelles.
