Jordan was an exceptional manager of some of the most hardcore engineering teams building @CockroachDB. Jordan was also my last manager, and key to me learning that like Ye, I can't be managed. If Jordan couldn't do it, I guess it can't be done. Like everyone else last year, Jordan and I were claudemaxxing our various personal workflows and swapping notes. But as a manager of exceptional teams he started to go a level deeper, and earlier this year he started asking: How do teams use AI together? How do best-practice workflows that one hero builds actually turn into durable organizational assets? He built a prototype at Cockroach Labs, and it spread like wildfire. The surprise was that as they talked to other enterprises, they discovered that every enterprise has this problem in spades. Startups can adopt AI quickly and grow into new workflows, but enterprises struggle to go beyond empowering individuals - that's why there are dozens of deploycos trying to figure out what the enterprise AI journey is. But there is a way to take the work of an AI hero and ship it to the whole org. It's Tiles. And I'm excited that Jordan and Lakshmi are finally sharing what they're building in public.
Today @kannanlakshmi and I are launching Tiles to help leaders turn scattered AI wins into company-wide transformation. We built its precursor at @CockroachDB, which quickly transformed the way the company worked. Within a few weeks, people from every department had created and shared thousands of apps, skills and agents, and made them part of how they worked every day. Witnessing this rapid transformation at Cockroach Labs gave us the conviction that what’s holding companies back from reaching business outcomes with AI isn’t a newer, smarter model, but an environment where sharing, learning, and collaborating with colleagues is easy. Armed with the lessons from building that first version, we left our jobs — me after 10 years, and Lakshmi after 7 — to build Tiles. Since June, we've talked to hundreds of enterprise AI leaders. Those leaders have described similar problems: how do you scale the work that your AI-pilled people have produced into the baseline for the whole company? Tiles is our answer to that question, and it enables teams to turn one person's best agent, app or skill into the team standard: governed, permissioned, on any model and within a company's own cloud. Tiles is for every employee: the most AI-forward people on your team, as well as the people who just want to get their jobs done. The current conversation about AI makes it easy to believe that the second group is destined to economic failure. We couldn't disagree more. Not everyone needs to keep up with every new model release and harness update just to stay afloat. They just need what their expert colleagues have already built. AI at work is still in its MS-DOS era. Motivated adopters get incredible value, but how many people are still staring at a blinking text box waiting for someone to help them get started? Or being told to focus on AI by leadership, with no time to figure it out amidst looming, ordinary deadlines? The Windows moment for work AI hasn’t happened yet. But we think it’s coming fast. We're grateful to be backed by @AmplifyPartners, @Work_Bench, @CockroachDB and a group of experienced angels including @petermattis, @georgebdavis, and @Nate_Stewart. Even if we never get high speed rail now there's at least one vehicle that can use this section, no ramp required

the rocket roadster is pretty much like a laferrari, right? like youre going to "own" it but like theyre not going to let you take it off the special track onto public roads. there will be track days when you can drive "your" car. the non-rocket edition will just be a normal car

ferrari is an entire business engineered around extracting money from people through an escalating series of birkin bags with wheels on them that you pay to unlock, BUT also organizing well run track days. but like a tesla track day is probably gonna be terrible!

The circle of fifths is off by 1.4%, a stain on harmony that we smear across each interval so every single chord you hear is off by at least 0.1%, the universe has always been cruel
You can do Fourier transforms in O(N log(N)^0.9999999999999) time. Fuck this gay chud universe

BREAKING: OpenAI just published an improved bound for mass energy equivalence. It's now E = mc^1.99999999 + AI. Lean proof incoming.

I love this bridge. Nothing else I've seen comes close to capturing the Ozymandean vibe. "Look upon my vast manufacturing base and despair".
America's most American bridge.

The statue of Prometheus is finally finished. It was cast in Paris, crossed the Atlantic, and was assembled at Starbase. It took us 100 days to go from nothing to this. People of the West, we have lived through an era devoid of dreams, devoid of destiny. But the time has come to reclaim our dream of antiquity. In a few months, we will start building a new city. It will be the most magnificent city in all of history. After all, the great dream of the West has always been to rebuild Rome. Come walk beside us in this endeavor. The world is waiting.

Hearing some crazy rumours that an internal Claude model has solved 100 major open problems in ethics including the euthyphro dilemma and the moral status of digital minds. OpenAI apparently now scrambling to solve the trolley problem.

If you speed up cognition it's functionally equivalent to slowing down the speed of light. If we're just 4 orders of magnitude off the physical limits, it would take 1 full year for a light signal to go around a single star Dyson sphere. If it's 6 ooms you wouldn't even go around your own star let alone interstellar
What’s your solution to the Fermi Paradox?

Anyway it's not clear we're anywhere close to the maximum speed given our brains run at a 20w power envelope.

1. Meet people in person in California (two party consent state for recordings) 2. Go for coffee walks - hard to keep a phone out recording in a moving situation 3. Make a joke about how you're glad to talk to a real human who's not a granola meat proxy and that it creeps you out. 4. If you do this and they are somehow still recording, Claude will really chew them out for it.
Very useful insight from a portfolio founder: VCs are using Granola and feeding notes into a poorly prompted version of Claude to evaluate and pick apart what founders are saying mid-pitch. The frustrating thing is that AI tends toward groupthink...so "trends" on the internet (whether true or not) color how VCs respond even more today than historically. This founder is tracking those sometimes unfounded trends and turns of phrase and ensuring he rebuts them right out of the gate.

California Fastrak has a full bitemporal implementation for its toll billing, unlike E-ZPass on the east coast, which can only handle a single system time. Who are the database magicians who implemented that for the state of California?

Where is Henry Cabot Lodge when you need him most!?
imagine Oppenheimer saying he wouldn’t give up control of the nukes to the US, but instead only to a collection of nation-states Dario admitting this is kinda him saying the quiet part out loud: “we believe we hold immense power and should not have to submit to the authority of the state” pretty insane when you take all of his statements together, at face value. >we are building a potential world-killer >no we will not hand it over to the state they want total control of the ‘nuke’ that is AGI, they’re very clear about this.
