Wherever you fall on what the future becomes it is important to recognize that the new systems at AI labs currently have characteristics being "poor at instruction following, coupled with a lack of common sense." (via @GaryMarcus)

Codex is one of the most important untold stories in the history of technology.
A year ago, it was a scrappy effort in a quiet corner of @OpenAI. Its cloud product hadnβt found PMF, and the team was starting over from scratch.
Less than 12 months later:
- Codex swallowed the flagship ChatGPT desktop app from the inside (it literally runs as com.openai.codex on your Mac)
- Codex and ChatGPT for Work hit 40M+ weekly users across engineering and knowledge work
- Its leader @thsottiaux was elevated to run all of OpenAIβs core products, including ChatGPT, Codex, and the API
How did they pull it off?
They trained their own dedicated model line, separate from ChatGPT, with researchers and product builders sitting on the same team
They built four different products in a single year (cloud β terminal β IDE sidebar β a desktop app with no code editor at all) as every model leap made a new form factor possible
They used Codex to build Codexβso a handful of people could prove a new product in weeks instead of arguing for it in meetings
I had a front-row seat to the whole arcβfrom their failed Cloud launch, to OpenAIβs offices the night before GPT-5 dropped, to the day Codex took over ChatGPT.
And I spent months interviewing @gdb, @thsottiaux, @embirico, @mia_glaese, @aambrosino, and @edbayes to get inside how it all went down.
Here is the full, behind-closed-doors story of the team that remade OpenAI:

Weβre pushing the boundaries of how stories like this are told.
This piece is completely agent-nativeβdesigned to be read alongside your agent inside ChatGPTβs in-app browser:
- Every interview transcript is included in full: Click any quote and you (or your agent) can see the exact conversation it came from.
- Built for your agent to explore: Ask your agent to pull out product lessons for your team, cross-examine the transcripts, or find insights I missed when writing the piece.
Itβs a story about the future of softwareβbuilt to be read with an agent:

Still thinking about this incredible tweet
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and weβre grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBIβs investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.
Now, that is a psyop!
Watch MAGA X invent a scandal about James Talarico in real time.
For four days they teased it and built up to the big day. Paxton called him "missing." Spencer Pratt's "sources" put him in a mental health facility. Then, at 1:05 pm, Nick Sortor posted that an Ohio mental hospital "confirms" Talarico was discharged.
50 accounts pushed the claim within 20 minutes. Those posts have 9.3 million views.
The white dots are copy-pasted posts. There are 605 of them. One account posted the same text 83 times in under 2 hours.
The hospital says Talarico never received treatment there. Talarico says he's never even been to Ohio.
This story eventually even made it to MSM. This is MAGA manufacturing an alternative reality in real time.
Full breakdown with the data here:

Funnily you get similar language from AI Safety / EA world as below; that AI is too important an issue to allow it to be a partisan one.
But people are concerned about the trajectory of AI. People donβt trust the tech industry to address those concerns. This is a hangover from mistakes in both the social media era as well as the nihilistic cash grab of web3/crypto. Folks donβt distinguish Anthropicβs position versus anyone elseβs. The whole crew just isnβt trusted.
So good news! Itβs not partisan because voters from both parties agree there are real risks from AI that need to be urgently addressed. And those whoβve supported the most laissez faire approach to AI governance for several years are simply going to be on the wrong side of the politics to come.
You canβt decry this as political partisanship. Itβs the consequence for bad judgement.
Everyone involved in the debate over AI policy needs to focus on facts and reality. This is too important to let partisanship grind progress to a halt.
We have an opportunity to pass a smart, strong national regulatory framework that creates American jobs, drives economic growth, expands access to the benefits of AI for all Americans, establishes meaningful frontier model safety standards, and protects users, kids and communities.
Extreme voices and partisanship will derail efforts to pass regulation that can actually become law and be implemented.
We need to tune out the noise, reject fearmongering, and not allow narrow corporate agendas masquerading as altruism to stand in the way of real progress.
