When I first heard about the @enhanced_games I thought it was a tremendously stupid idea. Then I started reporting it. Tonight the games starts in Vegas. Here's why I changed my mind—and why the data matters and what still bothers me overmatter.substack.com/p/fe…

This is irresponsible amplification of false information attempting to discredit a free and independent press simply for reporting the facts. Our statement replying to @RobertKennedyJr:
.@SherylNYT reporting on HHS is a three-legged stool resting on: 1. Anonymous sources, 2. Compromised sources with undisclosed conflicts of interest, and 3. Sinister speculation masquerading as fact—all in service to her unhinged hatred of Donald Trump. #TDS

“Don’t insult my intelligence by trying to feed me this load of BS.” - this is how the opponents of the lab leak hypothesis speak about each other’s arguments in private! On this occasion Baric speaks for us all.

NEW: @RollingStone has updated its story on the controversial hep B vax clinical trial in Guinea-Bissau funded by @CDCgov, to include a new statement from @WHO: WHO spokesman Tarik Jašarević: “Even with the new protocol, the study is unethical.” rollingstone.com/politics/po…

Danish philosopher @stigborsen resigned from Univ. Southern Denmark ethics panel, after it voted to approve controversial Guinea-Bissau hep B vax clinical trial, under time pressure to get @CDCgov grant $$ . He tells @RollingStone: race 4 funding "short-circuited the process."
Peter Singer taught us about "the life you can save." This is its grim inverse — the life you won't save: a protective vaccine withheld from some infants, by lottery, to study something else. Don't run vaccine lotteries in deprived areas. Just vaccinate.

Deeply saddened by the passing of @HelenBranswell, a journalist of integrity and professionalism. Throughout her career, Helen demonstrated an unwavering commitment to evidence, science and truth, helping the public understand some of the most complex and consequential health challenges of our time. At a moment when misinformation competes with facts, her reporting was a trusted source of clarity, honesty and insight. We at @WHO were privileged to work with Helen over many years, whether through one-on-one interviews or the hundreds of press conferences she attended during COVID-19 and beyond. Her questions were always informed, thoughtful and fair, reflecting a deep commitment to helping the public understand the facts and their implications for health. On behalf of WHO, I extend my sincere condolences to Helen’s family, friends and colleagues. She will be greatly missed.

Finely reported account from the front lines of the vaccine wars. Like the Scopes trial of our era.
Important reporting from @KatherineEban in @RollingStone on Aaron Siri’s efforts to undermine childhood vaccination and his extraordinary influence inside HHS. I spoke with her about how he misrepresents the clinical trial evidence. Well worth reading. rollingstone.com/politics/po…

Healthbeat found a D.N. Shipilova listed as a co-author of plague bacteria research by scientists from the Irkutsk institute that was presented earlier this year. The study examined the antibiotic susceptibility of Yersinia pestis strains.

Since the first media reports, @WHO has been actively following up on the reported death of a laboratory worker at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute in Irkutsk oblast, Russian Federation. The individual died on 2 October 2026 after being hospitalised with severe pneumonia. Initial media reports suggested pneumonic plague following an alleged accidental laboratory exposure. In response to WHO’s verification request under the International Health Regulations, the Russian health authorities reported that no case of plague had recently been registered in Irkutsk oblast. They informed WHO that an epidemiological investigation had been conducted, preventive and control measures implemented, and identified contacts placed under medical observation and tested. They reported that no high-threat pathogens had been detected among the contacts and that medical observation of all identified contacts had been completed. WHO has remained in contact with the Russian health authorities and has offered technical support. WHO has requested further information to clarify the cause of the severe pneumonia, the pathogen that prompted the public health measures, and media reports of a second employee with pneumonia of undetermined cause. Timely, complete and transparent information sharing under the International Health Regulations is essential to clarify conflicting reports and enable an accurate assessment of potential public health risks.

Some personal news: today marks the start of a new career chapter for me… I’ve gone freelance! In August, I took the difficult decision to leave the New Statesman after nearly three great years. I wanted & needed a re-set and some time with my family. Since then, I’ve spent a great summer with my children and had a little downtime. I’m planning to write, broadcast, and chair events from time to time, too. If you think I could help your organisation with any of these, please get in touch. As always, if you have a story to share, please get in touch. I’ll always do my best for you. I’ve never been known to opt for the easy ride, so I see no point in starting now! I’m excited about what this new start will bring…

Worth saying over and over, "We should want to know what happened here so we can stop this from happening again". The partisan nature of this discussion continues to be unhelpful to the uncovery of the truth.
After @bgurley's talk on #COVID origins at the @theallinpod summit, a lot of folks reached out, asking what I thought. I agree w/ much of what he said, incl: "We should want to know what happened here so we can stop this from happening again." 🧵👇youtube.com/watch?v=A4Q7zAay… /1

Lastly, Gurley calls for a "truly independent commission" to examine COVID origins, and calls the partisan nature of the debate "nuts. There's no way that should be relevant in this discussion." Agreed. Here's his list of resources: p3.institute/searching_for_f… /END
