Prostheses connected to the nervous system have existed for years. Researchers at ETH Zurich have found evidence that neural prostheses work better if their signals come from the natural world. 🦿 brnw.ch/21wHaRf @SRaspopovic @natnatkatic @giacomo_valle #NeuralProstheses
The long-lasting and inspiring effort to comprehend whether, and how, we can artificially restore natural sensations and enhance patients' mobility. Is #biomimicry really a way to go? @NatureComms
Thankful to be welcomed in this incredible team @giacomo_valle @SRaspopovic 🤗
#Neuroprostheses often evoke unpleasant sensations, like tingles over the skin, failing to provide #natural sensations back to the brain 🧠
Inspired by biology we designed a neuro-robotic #biomimetic #stimulation ⚡ to restore more naturalistic sensations than before 🧵
Finally, the results of many exciting and inspiring hours with @JMBalaguerSerra @SRaspopovic @MCapogrosso spent on analyzing the effects of peripheral nerve stimulation on neural processes in the spinal cord and brain, are out!

By looking at the powerful spinal manifolds and following neverending discussions with @SRaspopovic @MCapogrosso,@JMBalaguerSerra and I found that electrical stimulation of touch afferents can perturb spinal circuits' responses and disrupt the processing of proprioceptive input!

Sense of touch can be restored with #neurotechnology but why is it so hard to induce proprioception? In this preprint we wondered if neural architecture limits what we can achieve with neurotechnology #neurmodulation #neuroprosthetics biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
