Congrats Hamilton, Hardin and Story Counties- you have some of the wettest soil conditions in Iowa. 🙄🙄
After near-record September rainfall led to saturated soils and delayed harvesting, multiple days of sunshine have led to some improvement in soil moisture that should continue. Rain chances next week may slow this improvement some as we continue further into fall. #iawx
Soil judging practice for breakfast? Yes!! Good luck to all the H.S. Soil Judgers at the state contest this week! Dirty hands = happy agronomist!
And thus concludes my research sampling for the season! The weather was prefect for grabbing samples for ear mold evaluation, but field conditions were still really wet in 3/4 locations. #ISUCrops
NC Iowa, I know you are back at harvest, but here is your invitation to learn more about edge of field conservation practices. Put it on your calendar while you are waiting on the grain cart, or the semi, or the combine! 😉

Here is a great opportunity to see and learn more about edge of field conservation practices. We start at the @ISUNorthernRF at Kanawha, will do a short driving tour to look at practices and return to the farm for lunch and @ISUAgWaterMgmt talk about nitrate issues.
3.3 inches rain at the western suburbs of Story City, so far, and that comes on top of 0.49 from Tue-Wed. And sadly, I feel lucky after seeing other reports. @JustinMGlisan @maddy_climate
Grain quality issues with delayed harvest are not endemic to the whole state, but it might be worth a call to your crop insurance agent. Depending on the policy some of these losses may need to be documented and adjusted prior to harvest. crops.extension.iastate.edu/…
September edition of NC Iowa Agronomy Connection Newsletter is out. Harvest challenges, grain quality, upcoming events: go.iastate.edu/FG2XDP

An easy way to support the ISU Northern Research Farm is through gifts of grain. Designate gifted bushels at your elevator this fall. Call Greg or Matt for more information.
There is always something to see in a cornfield, even on a wet, dreary day. Look at the growth on the cereal rye and look at those earthworm middens! The worms are already pulling the lower corn leaves into the soil as well as the rye.
