Security called me at 6:12 AM today.
"Patch every PHP server immediately."
I asked what happened.
"Two critical vulnerabilities. Remote code execution. No authentication required."
Cool.
How many PHP servers do we have?
According to inventory: 12
According to reality:
Nobody knows.
We found one running WordPress.
Three running old internal tools.
One under someone's desk.
Two inside vendor appliances.
A forgotten employee directory from 2016.
And a server named:
PHP-OLD-DO-NOT-TOUCH
Naturally, that one runs payroll exports.
Then we found a PHP 5.6 box.
I asked who owned it.
The documentation said:
BRIAN.
Brian left in 2019.
We called Brian.
He said:
"Oh wow, that's still running?"
Excellent.
By 8 AM, leadership joined the incident call.
CEO:
"Can hackers actually get in?"
Security:
"Potentially yes."
CEO:
"Without a password?"
Security:
"Yes."
CEO:
"Then why do WE need passwords?"
Not the lesson.
Finance asked if we could wait until the weekend to patch because downtime affects revenue.
Security explained that the alternative was letting strangers execute code on our servers.
Finance asked for a cost comparison.
At 9:17, someone suggested temporarily taking the vulnerable websites offline.
Marketing refused.
"Our campaign is live."
So for the next hour, the company officially decided maintaining a landing page for 20% off webinar registration was more important than preventing remote server takeover.
We finally patched everything we could find.
Then our scanner discovered another PHP server.
Hostname:
TEMP-PHP-2014
Uptime:
4,512 days.
Nobody knows what it does.
Nobody owns it.
Nobody can shut it down.
But every time we block network access, the warehouse stops printing shipping labels.
Security has classified it as critical infrastructure.
It is running PHP 5.4.
The vulnerability has existed longer than half our employees.
The emergency patch took four hours.
Finding out what PHP actually runs took eleven.
The internet isn't held together with code.
It's held together with servers everyone is afraid to turn off.

As a lifelong gamer, I think deeply about how to make gaming better and more accessible for everyone across consoles, desktops, laptops, handhelds, and the developers who build the games.
We power over a billion gaming devices around the world. It’s a responsibility we care deeply about.
Today, five drops.
1) FSR 4.1 is coming to Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards. Tuned and optimized from the 6900 series down to the 6400 class.
For the first time, FSR 4.1 is coming to APUs.
2) All Gorgon Halo and Strix Halo for your mini desktops and mobile workstations.
3) All Gorgon and Strix Ryzen 9 for your laptops.
4) All Z2E and Z2A for your handhelds and for gamers on the go.
5) FSR 4.1 is coming to @XBOX. Optimized for @ASUS_ROG Xbox handhelds and Xbox Series X | S.
We’re still building.
FSR Redstone is now in more than 400 games on Radeon 9000 series graphics cards.
FSR Frame Generation gets more consistent frame pacing, for smoother gameplay.
Ray Regeneration is coming to more games.
And soon, FSR is coming to Vulkan. Another way for developers to bring it into their games.
And don’t worry, we are working hard to bring FSR to more APUs in the future.
Enjoy! – at Austin, TX

Excellent exchange between LBC'S Nick Ferrari & Times's Fraser Nelson on Welfare Reform. Fraser tells us UK cannot afford the current bill of £120bn. He also said Pat McFadden was keen to introduce radical reforms. Will the PM support these changes & what about the Labour Party?

The busiest job in Westminster is running after the PM with a dustpan and brush, sweeping up whatever he said five minutes earlier.
Implying the 2016 referendum was illegitimate, until the entire govt comms machine scrambled to clarify what he said. Opening up a Scottish referendum, which his team had to shut down. Telling the WASPI women they deserved recompense, only to backtrack.
Burnham is all over the place, making statements he clearly hasn’t thought through.

🚨 @DonaldCMacleod 👉 “#Glasgow, over the past 10 years under SNP control, has watched the city’s managed decline: visitor numbers down. 15 Million less visitations, an 18% drop. Countless retailers, nightclubs & pubs have closed. Shutters down." The City run into the ground!!

This is economic illiteracy of a high order.
After separation Scotland would still use sterling. So it would have to borrow in £s to cover its massive budget deficit and promise lenders it would pay back in £s (or they won’t lend).
But after an unspecified transition it would move to a Scottish currency. But all the borrowing done during the transition would have to be paid back in sterling.
If the Scottish currency plummeted v sterling (likely given the size of the deficit, lack of credit track record etc) that could become an unmanageable burden given the likely poor exchange rate.
Scotland would have to borrow billions in its own currency just to convert to sterling to pay back lenders. Devaluing the Scottish currency further.
What a shambles that would be.
He has no idea what he’s talking about.

The people of Israel are praying for Captain Smit Machchhar, the brave Indian pilot who fought off the hijacker even after being stabbed and opened the cockpit door to let the Israelis in to help save the plane.
A true hero. 🇮🇱🇮🇳

Hero
Had this man not found the courage to fight back after being repeatedly attacked with an axe capable of cutting through metal—while bleeding profusely—and had the presence mind to trigger the hijack/emergency code, initiate the emergency response and open the cockpit door to allow passengers to assist him, the aircraft’s subsequent dive could have had catastrophic consequences.
Had that aircraft not been recovered, the geopolitical consequences for the Middle East could have been profound and potentially irreversible.
Sometimes history turns on the courage, resilience and presence of mind of one person.
Yes. One Indian man.

Today it seems we witnessed both the toxic power of Jew hate and the searing heroism of ordinary Jews.
On that insane flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, the murderous bigotry of the extremist came head to head with the Jewish people's love of life. Mercifully, the latter won. The Jews were victorious.
Once again, they thwarted their enemies.
The footage from that flydubai flight is terrifying. What we know is that one of the pilots viciously attacked another pilot, with a knife or perhaps an axe. He then "apparently tried to crash the plane", says Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The plane plummeted 17,000 feet in just two minutes. Imagine the horror of that. In one of the clips you can hear wails of terror as the plane falls from the sky.
