NEMA MOVES TO PROTECT LWERA WETLAND FROM ILLEGAL SAND MINING
@nemaug, working with @MODVA_UPDF, Environmental Protection Police Unit and Environmental Protection Force, has intensified enforcement in Lwera Wetland to curb environmental degradation caused by illegal sand mining. The operations covered Mpigi and Kalungu districts.
Enforcement teams impounded trucks, excavators and other equipment, while several suspects were arrested. Illegal sand mining destroys habitats, disrupts drainage and accelerates soil erosion. Under the National Environment Act, Cap. 181, offenders face fines of up to UGX 600 million, up to 12 years in prison, or both.
Standing Ovation for @nemaug, @min_waterUg, @MODVA_UPDF, EPF, EPPU and all stakeholders!

NEMA SHARES UGANDAโS AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT LESSONS WITH ZIMBABWE
@nemaug, has hosted a delegation from Harare, Zimbabwe, to share Ugandaโs experience in air quality monitoring, pollution control and stakeholder collaboration.
The visit by Zimbabweans provided an opportunity for both countries to exchange knowledge and practical solutions. The engagement took place on Wednesday, 14th October at NEMA House in Kampala.
Uganda shared key lessons on addressing air pollution, including the National Environment Act, Cap. 181, the National Environment (Air Quality Standards) Regulations, 2024, and the use of reference-grade and low-cost air quality sensors.
Discussions also explored the respective roles of regulators and polluters in monitoring air quality, enforcement, and how local government bylaws complement national regulations.
The Harare delegation invited @nemaug for a reciprocal benchmarking visit to learn from Zimbabweโs waste management experience, including its waste-to-energy facility.
The host welcomed the invitation, reaffirming the value of regional cooperation in advancing practical solutions to environmental challenges; emphasing that these challenges do not stop at national borders, and neither should the search for solutions.
