With the clocks going back this weekend #NewForest ponies & animals will be harder to see on or close to Forest road. Please take extra care when driving especially when there is low dazzling sunlight, poor light or bad weather. 🙏 #PassWideAndSlow

#NoTreatsHere please! Did you know that while some wildlife may enjoy a tasty pumpkin snack it can make them unwell and can spread disease? 🎃 We ask people not to leave these out in the #NewForest as they can cause harm to the ponies. 🐴 Please share. 🙏 #CareForTheForest

With the pony drifts under way, you may spot some ponies wearing reflective collars in the New Forest. These collars play an important role in helping ponies be seen by drivers, particularly during the darker mornings and evenings when visibility can be reduced. With ponies roaming freely across the Forest and often grazing close to roads, anything that helps drivers spot them sooner can make a difference. The collars are funded through the Verderers of the New Forest Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) scheme, supporting practical measures to help protect the Forest’s free-roaming ponies and keep road users safe. Reflective collars are just one part of the picture, though. There are various other initiatives to tackle the number of animal accidents, like New Forest Roads Awareness campaign group, Operation Mountie, New Forest Drive Safe business group and the salt lick scheme, among others. So as the days start to get shorter, please take extra care when driving through the New Forest. Slow down, stay alert and be prepared for animals to appear near or cross the road, especially at dawn and dusk. #NewForest #NewForestPonies #PonyDrifts #DriveSafe #RoadSafety

🦎 Happy National Reptile Day! 🐍 Did you know the New Forest is home to all six of the UK’s native reptiles? 🌿 From the familiar grass snake and adder to the elusive smooth snake, the Forest provides a home for an incredible variety of reptile species. Sand lizards, common lizards, slow worms and grass snakes all have their own habitat needs, from sunny heathlands and sandy areas to grasslands, woodland edges and wetlands. Reptiles play an important role in the Forest ecosystem, helping to keep nature in balance. They need a mixture of habitats where they can find food, shelter, places to bask in the sunshine and safe spots to breed. Through the Species Survival Fund (SSF), a two-year project led by the New Forest National Park Authority which finished earlier this year, partners worked across the Forest to restore and improve habitats for a wide variety of wildlife. This included restoring valuable heathlands, improving wetland habitats and tackling threats to the Forest’s internationally important wildlife. By improving the condition and connectivity of these habitats, the project has helped to create better conditions for reptiles and the many other species that call the New Forest home 💚 #NationalReptileDay #NewForest #SpeciesSurvivalFund #Reptiles #WildlifeConservation #NatureRecovery 📸 Common lizard by Chris Dresh

Rangers from the New Forest NPA visited 87 locations across the National Park in September, having interesting conversations with more than 2,300 people about the Forest’s special nature and ways we can all help look after it. From Burley to King’s Hat, the team spent 177 hours supporting partners, attending events, taking part in wildlife patrols, and highlighting the importance of always following the #NewForestCode to protect landscapes and wildlife. September highlights included: 🍄 Sharing advice about the National Park’s autumnal habitats and fungi and why it’s important to leave nature for wildlife and others to enjoy #LookDontTouch 🎪 Attending events to get people excited about green spaces on their doorsteps, including the British Science Festival, Romsey Show, and Hythe of Activity 🌱 Meeting young people and discussing the Forest’s special qualities, raising awareness of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) that protect against feeding and petting ponies and the risks of fires 👮 Making the New Forest’s roads safer alongside partner organisations through joint operations like #OpMountie

Memorable encounter with a #NewForest red deer stag today. On the heath, watching stonechats & meadow pippits, totally oblivious to anything outside the field of view of my binoculars, totally failed to see this chap emerge from the adjacent woodland! Then he was ALL I could see!

🐣 Nature’s seasons are changing - and a pioneering project is helping us understand what that means. A new pilot project across the New Forest and South Downs National Parks is bringing together scientists, conservationists and the public to track when flowers bloom, butterflies emerge and trees come into leaf. Early findings show that several species are already responding to warmer springs by emerging earlier. While early arrivals may seem harmless, these shifts could severely disrupt the interconnected relationships that hold our precious ecosystems together.
