My social media feed is awash with Forest fans lamenting the loss of a Champions League spot many came to expect.
The best are expressing their disappointment and the worst are criticizing the club, the coach, and the players for “bottling it”.
I don’t know how many on here actually run businesses or have coached teams over multiple years but the general sentiment I see is exceptionally misplaced.
Managing and developing a group of people or an organization from an underperforming place to one of exceptional performance is one of the most difficult things to do. And long term, sustainable success is an ever elusive thing that many have spent time chasing and even more have tried studying to determine the secret.
Some of the best books on long term, sustainable organizational success have been written by a man named Jim Collins and his team of researchers. His books, Good to Great and Great by Choice are some of the best studies on what makes great organizations that achieve sustained success, even in the face of austere environments (highly recommend you read both if you haven’t already).
One of the key concepts of Great by Choice is the 20-Mile March (jimcollins.com/concepts/twen…).
The 20-Mile March concept is described as “Enterprises that prevail in turbulence self-impose a rigorous performance mark to hit with great consistency—like hiking across the United States by marching at least 20 miles a day, every day. The march imposes order amidst disorder, discipline amidst chaos, and consistency amidst uncertainty.”
Enterprises that aim to do too much too quick or fail to hold themselves to the discipline of regimented growth often fail to achieve sustained success and flame out (Leicester).
Applying this concept to Forest one can argue that Conference League or Europa are a more appropriate next step in Forest’s journey and represent a solid step forward without over extending the organization and risking unsustainable growth.
My advice to everyone, for what it’s worth, is to take everything you can from these last two games, soak up every bit of what has been an outstanding season that far exceeded expectations, appreciate whatever result we end up with, and support the team and club in building toward a sustainable level of success.
