My lab is hiring a postdoc! unc.peopleadmin.com/postings… We are looking for someone with experience in protein purification and structural biology techniques (experience in cryo-EM is a plus!). If you are interested, or know someone who is, please reach out to me!

Acoustofluidic Cryo-EM is a new specimen preparation strategy that uses acoustic waves to enhance cryo-electron microscopy.

ALT Illustration of Acoustofluidic Cryo-EM (ACE), a specimen preparation strategy that uses acoustic waves to enhance cryo-electron microscopy. In developing ACE, Yang et al. integrated acoustofluidic manipulation into a conventional plunge-freezing workflow, preserving the structural integrity of samples while improving imaging quality. The sound waves eliminate contamination as no physical tools are needed, helping prevent damage when capturing images and ensuring a more uniform distribution of nanoparticles. ACE provides a method to improve specimen quality and imaging efficiency and expand structural studies of challenging biological systems. Credit: Jun Huang, Ying Chen, and coauthors

I am astounded, (truly, truly, truly) and filled with hope for us all. This is wonderful news for humanity and I’ll leave it at that.

A wild thing just happened at US BRAIN Initiative meeting. Bryan Roth (inventor of DREADDs) played a video from a Chinese PI, Minmin Luo, explaining their recent first-in-human chemogenetic trial for epilepsy. If we needed more evidence that China is ahead in neuro, this is it.

In other words, despite Bhattacharya having made the fate of young investigators one of his top three talking points from the beginning he did absolutely nothing to change this in FY2025.

So, to the students/fellows/young scientists: when someone says that your vision is too big, too ambitious & too risky - don't lose heart - use this as motivation - believe in yourself & keep at it! One day, you will show the world that nothing is impossible! #Win#For#Science

More than 40 years ago, I arrived in Chicago in search of an idea. I was a young man looking for purpose, who believed deeply in America, was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, and wanted to be a part of something larger. The America I believed in was one where everyone has opportunity, everyone is seen, everyone belongs—because that was an America that had a place for me, too.

The sun is fascinating to watch. This timelapse was recorded using a modified telescope designed to safely observe the solar chromosphere, captured over a period of several hours from my backyard in Arizona.
The entire Earth would be a small dot at this distance of ~93M miles.
With codex and careful use, it can save hours of manual troubleshooting

DREADDs in humans--update:
3 clinical trials using hM4Di in humans registered in China. 2 for epilepsy and 1 for Parkinson's Disease.
In our original paper we stated:
"...We suggest that at least one of these designer receptors, hM4D, will prove useful for neuronal silencing in vitro and in vivo.."
It seems we were correct.
