How do MLB teams know when to give their base stealers the green light?
I built a Monte Carlo simulation using the last 5 seasons of MLB data to simulate the number of expected runs per inning based on runners on base and the number of outs. According to the model, this is the breakeven point of success rate you would need in every situation to increase your number of expected runs scored in that inning. In other words, how sure do you have to be of a successful stolen base attempt for it to be worth it?
The key takeaway confirms an old unwritten baseball rule: don't make the first or last out at third base.
