This World Series photo is one of the best sports photos I have ever seen, but the process behind how it was captured might be even more interesting. No, it wasn't done with AI or a drone. Here's what you need to know... Mike Carlson and Carmen Mandato took this photo, and Carlson broke down the process on Instagram. He says they go up on the catwalk before games to install a series of cameras mounted in different positions — looking at home plate, the mound, etc. But since photographers can't sit on the catwalk during games (and also have to take other photos), Carlson and Mandato install a trigger to help take photos remotely. The way it works is simple: When Carlson and Mandato take photos with their handheld camera in the outfield, the catwalk camera also takes a photo. The catwalk camera is also connected to a network, so it automatically sends the photo to an editor. This is similar to the process NBA photographers use to get those popular "spotlight effect" photos. But instead of mounting their camera on a catwalk in the arena, NBA photographers use a trigger to activate the strobe lights most NBA arenas have installed in the rafters. Most people never notice the strobe light going off, but once you do, you'll notice it every time. Super interesting.

Repost by Monday, November 2 for a chance to win this signed insert for the 4K Ultra HD release of FULL METAL JACKET from @WBHomeEnt! This is one of a few printer proofs they sent me prior to its release in 2020. I'll pick one winner at random and announce next #ModineMonday. Good luck! And if you'd like to support the @FMJDiary project and exhibition, you can bid on a rare, signed copy of my 2005 book here: ebay.io/m/oQCad6

Sacha Baron Cohen defends reviving his “problematic” Ali G character after more than a decade: “The fact that Ali G is outdated and problematic is the very reason I resurrected him. The world he’s returned to is, in many ways, worse than the one he left 20 years ago. All the prejudices my characters are designed to expose haven’t just lingered—they’ve metastasized. They’re fueled by the greatest propaganda machine in history—social media—and now by its monstrous child, AI.” variety.com/2026/film/global…

In Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie, “Ali G: Who Iz I?” he plays three characters who interact with real people. The scale of the challenge was unlike anything he had undertaken before. “We had to have, you know, prosthetic teams working on this for years. We had animatronic teams. There are hundreds and hundreds of things that can go wrong, and each of them has to go right,” he says. cbsn.ws/4sb9I4l

Ten years ago, I discovered a 700-strong list on @MUBI entitled ‘Edgar Wright’s Favorite Movies’, which came as something of a surprise, as I hadn’t written it. Though the American spelling of ‘favourite’ was a clue. The list had been created by Sam DiSalle, so I reached out to ask how he had compiled it. He explained that it included every film I had ever said I liked in interviews, articles and polls. I asked if I could edit it and, over the next few months, after much addition and subtraction, gave him enough further suggestions to bring the grand total up to a round 1,000 films. Every now and then I update it and thought I would do so ten years on. It is a very personal and entirely subjective selection of favourites from more than 100 years of cinema. Some people get extremely riled up about films they perceive to be ‘missing’, so please be warned: any comments along the lines of “What, no…?” will be deleted. It’s only one person’s list, and the great news is you can absolutely make your own. In fact, I encourage you to! I enjoy keeping the list fluid for my own pleasure, amusement and reference. I’m sharing a recently updated version in the hope that you’ll have fun poring over it and diving into some films you haven’t seen, or perhaps haven’t even heard of. I should also apologise to my friends at @1000filmsblog for adding and removing titles. I really don’t mean to increase your workload! Anything that has ever appeared on the list remains valid; I simply like to cycle films in and out according to rewatches and new discoveries. And, of course, enormous thanks to Sam DiSalle for helping me put it all together and maintain it over the years. Links to his MUBI and @letterboxd versions of the list are below. Film-watching is a lifetime pursuit, and there are still so many others out there for me to see. I hope these two lists are a great place to for you to start. Please give my regards to your eyeballs!
