Almost 60 local actors are hired from Madhubani, Darbhanga, and Patna for Jackson Halt 2. Apart from this almost 25 local people are hired as crew. This is what cinema brings when you keep making movies in your own languages. Employment. #MaithiliCinema

Bihar is slowly forgetting how to dance to its own music. During Navratri, our cities light up with Dandiya nights. There is nothing wrong with celebrating another culture. The question is: when will we celebrate our own with the same enthusiasm, pride and glamour? Where are the public celebrations of Jat-Jatin, Jhijhiya, Launda Naach, Bidesia and the countless folk traditions that once gave Bihar its distinct cultural identity? First, our languages began losing space to Hindi. Then our traditional food started being treated as something less sophisticated than what came from elsewhere. And now, even our dances and folk traditions seem to be fading from our public celebrations. We are becoming excellent consumers of other people’s culture while slowly forgetting the cultural wealth we already possess. The irony is that Bihar doesn’t lack culture. It lacks the confidence to celebrate its own culture. Dandiya is not the problem. Our indifference towards our own traditions is. A society doesn’t lose its culture in one day. It loses it a little at a time—when children stop learning their mother tongues, when folk artists struggle to earn a living, when traditional music is dismissed as outdated, and when we need an event from another culture to make a celebration look fashionable. We cannot keep talking about Bihar’s glorious past while allowing its living traditions to disappear from the present. If we don’t dance to our own music today, one day we may have to organise cultural festivals just to remember what our grandparents once danced to naturally.

The crossed-out image is currently doing the rounds on social media, and it is a perfect example of how misleading narratives about Bihar are manufactured and amplified. The actual photograph tells a very different story. A new construction is underway directly opposite the old building. The existing structure has been temporarily supported while the new classrooms are being built. That is the story. Nothing more, nothing less. But the complete picture is rarely shown. A misleading image, stripped of its context, is far more useful to certain social-media handles because it generates outrage, views, likes and shares—even if it comes at the cost of deliberately degrading Bihar’s image. Criticise Bihar when criticism is deserved. But don’t manufacture a narrative by hiding the truth. Bihar deserves scrutiny, not propaganda.

Started shooting my Sixth film, and I still feel like I am beginning. Some say it's a good sign. It is a strange feeling. On one hand, I know that directing a sixth film is an achievement. Especially when you have chosen to make films in the "languages of Bihar, with people from Bihar, and largely in Bihar". There was no established road waiting for us. Actually there were more adversity than support. We had to create much of that road ourselves. But strangely, the sixth film doesn't make me feel more secure. It makes me more aware of how much I still don't know. Every morning I wake up, see the scenes from my screenplay and visualise whether I am getting what I am trying to say. Will that be reciprocated ? Every film has humbled me. Every film has taught me that filmmaking is not about knowing all the answers. It is about having the courage to keep asking better questions, new questions. The challenges remain the same, and sometimes they have become bigger. How do you make a film in a language that the mainstream industry still considers a limited market ? This one is Maithili, unlike Bhojpuri cinema which seems to have lost much of its creative ground. Maithili is still in nascent phase as I see despite it's cinema started more than 50 years ago. So, how do you convince talented people to believe that meaningful cinema can be created from Bihar ? How do you build an ecosystem when even the idea of ecosystem itself is missing ? How do you keep experimenting without losing the audience? And perhaps the biggest challenge — "how do you keep your ambition alive without becoming overconfident?" I think I have finally found a small answer to that. "Confidence is necessary. Overconfidence is dangerous." I need enough confidence to believe that I can make the film I see in my head. But I also need enough insecurity to walk onto the set every morning and ask myself: Can this be better ? That question has probably helped me more than any award, success or failure. My aspiration is not simply to make six, ten or twenty films. I want to build a body of cinema from Bihar that doesn't need to constantly explain why it deserves to exist. An ecosystem where the actors and technicians from Bihar, get jobs in Bihar and same time our cinema gets a voice and many. Cinema in Bhojpuri, Maithili, and other languages of this region should not be treated merely as cultural preservation. It can be "good cinema. Great cinema. Cinema that travels." And perhaps, someday, the fact that a filmmaker has made his sixth film in Bihar's languages and in Bihar itself will not be considered unusual. For now, I am grateful that I have been able to continue. Six films. Many mistakes. A few victories. A lot of unfinished dreams. And, thankfully, "the hunger to make the next one." So I don't want to celebrate the sixth film as if I have arrived. I would rather look at it as proof that "I am still on the road." And there is still a long way to go. Can't thank Nitu Chandra Srivastava enough for her constant support and words. Latest addition to this support system is Chandra Nisha who has streamlined production with her immense talent and experience. Abhishek Chandra for her relentless hard work. There are many names and faces behind work we are doing. Thanking everyone. Wish us luck in this new journey.
