Keep busy. I haven't had an issue doing this because my brain is always stimulated with the work I'm doing. There is ALWAYS something I need to work on and I'm enabled to do what I want to a degree. I only leave either when I'm laid off or feel like I've plateaued in the role.

A lot of Americans have really shitty home lives with parents who don't love them and then expect them to survive on their own the second they turn 18. It's so common that when people see it NOT happening, they think something is wrong with YOU.
People also get mad when someone says "I did this!" while being supported by parents to some degree because it reads as privilege (and it is). Americans are so unbelievably individualistic that it's seen as "cheating" to have a support system.
