Today, I submit that a subsidy is a subsidy no matter how it is clothed and that duty waiver on food, cash transfers to the needy, and energy vouchers to workers, farmers and SME owners etc., are better policy responses than a return to petrol subsidy. 👇🏾 thisdaylive.com/2026/10/11/t…

In my column in today's @THISDAYLIVE, I discuss what makes the removal of petrol subsidy still an unsettled issue in Nigeria and why the Atiku plan to restore the subsidy is deeply problematic. 👇🏾 thisdaylive.com/2026/08/23/b…

This is a particularly important consideration when we remind ourselves that only around 17% of people worldwide live in high-income countries. Here's the distribution of econ research on taxation by country income group. Probably not so different in other econ subfields.
Replying to @NathanLazarus3
In fact, given that marginal utilities are so much higher in poor countries, why are we not asking all the people who study poverty alleviation in rich countries why they aren't studying that in poor countries instead? 3/

Many countries are trapped in cycles of unresolved debt crises & held back by an unfair system of vast debt repayments that drain public resources & undermine long-term investment. The Borrowers Platform – a new mechanism supported by the @UN – is a breakthrough in global financing – bringing borrowing countries together learn from each other & speak with a collective voice. un.org/sg/en/content/sg/stat…

No prizes for guessing the state that ‘stands out nationally’ for publishing individual LGA/LCDA budgets, as well as prior year’s audited accounts and budget performance reports, according to this report.
🗣️ Dear Nigerians, This is a very important conversation. We checked all 774 Local Governments in Nigeria to see if their budgets are public. For many of them, we found NOTHING. The government closest to us has become the hardest to see. Only 10 states publish accessible LGA budget data. Another 6 states share partial or outdated information. 18 states publish nothing. The full report is out. Read it here: budgit.org/post_publications… #AskQuestions #GetInvolved

Visited MOWAA last year and was so impressed with the vision and the (very clear) hard work that has gone into building this institution. This project is a generational game changer for Benin and I really hope authorities act with wisdom and foresight.
