Very excited to share that I am starting a postdoc position with the amazing @GwilliamsL at Stanford University!
We will be measuring neural tracking of prosody and linguistic information load in intracranial EEG. Can’t wait to explore this really cool dataset! 🧠
Do people talk to AI as if it were another human?
Read more about how speakers use prosody to focus important words when talking to AI devices in our new paper!

That's a wrap, for the first Bay Area Language Processing Interest Group meeting! Featuring a diverse collection of talks from Stanford, UCSF, UC Berkeley and UC Davis, and bringing together around 100 language researchers from our community. Looking forward to the next one!
How do our brains focus on important information when listening to someone speak?
Come see my first ever EEG results at poster D15, this afternoon at #SNL2023!
Together with @AssafBreska, Lee Miller, @YuliaOganian, @r_mangun & @SwaabTamara, we measure anticipatory attention during language comprehension through alpha oscillations and ERPs.

It was a blast to talk about speech disfluencies and my current work on @becauselangpod !
Check out their podcast to hear me talk on (and also demonstrate a ton of) uhs and uhms! 🫢
Yow! It's our biggest episode ever!
Why do we say stuff like UGH, OH, and UM? Amazing chats with @EMdoesCA and @NoraBeier about non-lexical vocalisations.
Wherever you get your podcasts.

Do we become more disfluent as we age?
@NeneChantavarin, @fernandaedi and I find out by analyzing 325 interviews with 91 famous people over their lives, gathered from YouTube and other social media!

When @fernandaedi brought up this idea to my dear friend and colleague @NeneChantavarin and I, we thought it’d be a short, fun side project.
6 years and 100s of revisions later, it has become quite an achievement!
Huge thanks to all the research assistants who worked on generating this corpus and the many people whose feedback helped us improve our work!

@NoraBeier will be presenting her work on the neural dynamic of anticipatory attention to speech tomorrow morning (F4) at #CNS2023 Can’t wait to see you all there!
Come to my #CNS2023 poster F4 (Tuesday 8am) to see the progress on this project, looking at the neural dynamics of anticipatory attention during spoken language comprehension!
With @AssafBreska, Lee Miller, @YuliaOganian, @r_mangun & @SwaabTamara
I’m delighted to announce I will be working as a postdoctoral scholar with the amazing @r_mangun and @SwaabTamara at @UCD_CMB starting this fall!
I will be funded by NIH (NRSA F32) to study rhythmic and nonrhythmic temporal attention during spoken language comprehension.
What happens when 154 speech scientists try to answer the same question using the same data?
Find out in this great paper by @TimoRoettger et al. Very glad to have contributed to this effort with @fernandaedi, Michelle Cohn and Georgia Zellou! We learned so much from everyone!

Want to hear me talk about our successful replication of Cutler and Fodor's classic 1979 experiment on discourse focus?
Come to my #psynom22 poster at Poster Session III - this Friday 6-7pm!
Very excited for our new #RegisteredReport in #JML with @fernandaedi
We successfully replicate Cutler & Fodor’s (1979) effect of discourse focus on RTs using updated procedure and statistical standards.

It also is an honor to have @stevenjluck as a consultant on this project, as well as the stellar @YuliaOganian and @AssafBreska, who I will visit for 3 months in Tübingen at @uni_tue Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and @MPICybernetics!
I can’t wait to meet and collaborate with the many amazing scientists in Tübingen and to continue working with great people at @UCD_CMB!
