It’s not irrelevant It shows what parliament can do when a region secedes the UK As It Did With The Irish Free State In 19 21 🤷 That’s it I’m up a beautiful river in a luxury yacht watching Kylie pour me a martini wearing those little gold shorts.

The law would be created by parliament as part of any secession agreement. Why wouldn’t it? As It Was With The Irish Free State In 19 21

Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

I agree. The British establishment should apologise over slavery. To us. For allowing this pathetic, self-loathing, anti-white bullshit to drag on for so long. The answer, to any jumped-up Caribbean or African, is this - you can piss off. End of debate.

As a gay man, I'll say what a lot of us are thinking. We fought to be left alone. To marry the man we love, keep our jobs, and live a quiet life. We won. Then woke activists took our letters, stapled on a dozen causes we never signed up for, and started calling us bigots for saying sex is real. That isn't our movement anymore.

The mind boggles. The nationalists have no answer for what currency an independent Scotland would use- and when they try, you get the below. I'm not even sure how wrong this SNP Cllr is- does she think Bank of Scotland notes are a different currency from UK Pounds? Did she think the whole debate was about where the physical notes were printed?

Seems quite a few nationalists don't understand that a 20-30% devaluation against GBP also means a 20-30% devaluation against the Euro, Dollar and Yen. You are proposing a massive loss of income for everyone in the public sector, public sector pensioners and those on welfare.

Broughty Ferry deserves so much better.
Today I was denied entry into the West Bank, alongside other parliamentary colleagues from across Europe as part of a @ProgIntl delegation. We were held for 8 hours, interrogated and ultimately prevented from crossing the border. I came to stand alongside Palestinians being attacked for harvesting olives on their own land. Instead, we were turned away, with no reason given. More than ever, Palestinians are being subject to terror and violence by the IDF and illegal settlers. Increased blockades, demolitions and unthinkable violence have become the norm for Palestinians in the West Bank. It is more important now than ever that we bear witness and show our solidarity. But we were prevented from doing so. I will continue to do everything I can to apply pressure on the Netanyahu government, and those responsible for the persecution and genocide of the Palestinian people.

What is it about this cause in particular. Is it because it’s fashionable. Or because it’s the Jews on the other side. Disgrace.

The ironic element to this was that they used it as a mechanism to drive people to vote yes but still lost and are now denying that it was ever the case

Astounding Sunday Times investigation reveals new scandal in SNP’s Socialist Scotland: 800 NHS, central government, council and quango workers whose jobs no longer exist but remain on the public payroll because of the SNP’s ‘no public-sector redundancy’ policy. Estimated cost of paying people to do nothing: £27m a year. One NHS Highland worker has been receiving a full salary and benefits for 17 years despite not having a specific job. The health board refused to say what the worker had been doing for almost two decades and how much they had been paid. Likely cost to the taxpayer is expected to be far higher with several public bodies refusing to disclose salaries for hundreds of the workers awaiting redeployment.

Tim Rideout always insisted a new currency could be established with conversion of deposits purely voluntary. But Laurentjoye’s report kills that idea (it always was mad). Deposits convert automatically “without the consent of each customer”. Good luck selling that to voters…
