no ambre, leftists do not care about others. if that were true, the left would not always be seeking dictatorial control. what being a leftist really means is pretending to care about the world as a pretext to seize and wield power and get free stuff. it's not care, it's conquest. this has always been what leftism is about and why it's an inherently destructive, intolerant ethos. the fact of it is obvious: you never build the means of production, you seize it. it's not charity, it's legal plunder taken at gunpoint. every time you guys say "justice" the real meaning is "force." it's your fundamental fraud and why you are anti-human and anti-progress. consider: nothing stops the left from engaging in voluntary collectivism. you could all get together and pool resources and labor, build enterprises, and care for the needy in your communities through your own choices and actions, but you don't because deep down, you know it's a lie and it would cost you instead of those you seek to plunder and coerce. this is why you steal rather than create. it's an army of takers masquerading as civilizers. so give it a rest. there are only two types of leftists: 1. cynical, power-hungry wreckers who will burn the world and murder millions so long as they get to wear a spiffy uniform and live in a big house and boss people around 2. those too foolish and ignorant of history to know that they have been taken in by group 1 the first is a monster, the second a dupe drunk on the lie that submission to monsters is empathy. and neither one makes the world better. there is no ethos in the history of humanity that has done more harm and anyone who mistakes that for virtue is desperately unserious.

DC was explicitly designed to not be a state for a whole host of reasons. There is not a legitimate argument for DC statehood beyond “I want two more blue senators”
As a 13-year resident of Washington, DC, I have just one question: Why shouldn't Washington, DC, be a state? Why should the 690,000 DC residents not have the same rights and representation as the rest of our fellow American citizens?

That the Communist hammer and sickle isn’t commonly regarded as evil and offensive as the Nazi swastika is a failure of education.
“Dear Italian students, who today take to the streets carrying flags with the hammer and sickle and wearing T-shirts emblazoned with ‘CCCP’,” began an open letter in Italian by Lithuanian expat Neringa Budryt. “I would like to ask you a question: do you truly know what the symbols you carry represent? And do you know what would have happened to many of you had you openly demonstrated in countries living under the oppression of communist regimes? Let me tell you something. It is easy to display a red flag when, for you, communism is merely an abstract idea of equality, social justice, and rebellion against the system. It is easy to wear a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it when you have never experienced the reality of a communist regime. We come from that part of Europe where communism was not a T-shirt, a symbol of rebellion, or a romanticized notion of equality. It was the system in which we lived—a system we never chose. We know the history of Soviet repression, Stalinist purges, the Gulags, and mass deportations. Above all, we know the word "Siberia"—a place to which thousands of innocent people were forcibly deported, simply for thinking differently. In Siberia—amidst freezing cold, starvation, and forced labor—many lost their lives; those who survived carried the scars of that experience forever. Entire families were torn apart, and generations were denied the chance to live freely in their own homeland. In the countries of the Soviet bloc, censorship, political police, surveillance, and the suppression of dissent drastically curtailed individual freedoms. We grew up in a system where state control permeated even our daily lives. At school, we were required to wear the red necktie of the "Pioneers." We were monitored; they tracked where we went and even whether we attended church. Even faith—a choice that should belong to an individual’s own conscience—could become a cause for suspicion. We used to celebrate Christmas with our windows blacked out, to ensure no one would see us and report us. Because it was forbidden—just like so many other things: jeans, rock music, and all the symbols of a Western lifestyle. My mother returned from a Soviet labor camp. And do you know what happened to her? She was barred from continuing her education because she had been labeled an enemy of communism. Under a communist regime, you could not protest. You risked arrest, imprisonment, interrogation, persecution—and, in certain historical contexts, even death. In the Soviet Union and other communist regimes, political dissent could cost you your freedom and your life. Demonstrations independent of the authorities were not a guaranteed right; they were often suppressed by force. That is why it strikes me to see young Italians proudly displaying the hammer and sickle—symbols associated with regimes that persecuted and imprisoned millions of people. Today, you are free to take to the streets, shout against the government, criticize institutions, and wave your flags precisely because you live in a democracy that grants you these freedoms. Under an authoritarian regime of that kind, protesting against those in power could have landed you in prison. This is not about denying the existence of social injustices, inequalities, or the right to fight for a better world. You are free to take to the streets to demand a more just society—but you should not idealize a system that denied so many people the very things you are free to exercise today: the right to choose, to believe, to speak, and to dissent. Before wearing a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it, listen to those who experienced that world. Talk to the deportees and their descendants; read the accounts of those who endured the gulags and forced exile to Siberia. Learn what it meant to be stripped of your freedom, your home, your loved ones—and even any prospect of a normal life—simply because of your background or your beliefs. Before waving the hammer and sickle, please, study history thoroughly.”

Matt Yglesias is 100% right, actually. The 1,500-hour pilot rule was passed after the 2009 Colgan crash. Except the captain had 3,379 hours. The first officer had 2,244 hours. It’s pure security theater that's driven up the pilot shortage & made flying more miserable for us all.

look guys, it's really simple. the whole "shane gillis women in gyms" thing is just the exhibitionism of certain women crashing into this meme. of course they dress like that at the gym to get attention (or to establish pecking order with other women). claiming otherwise is silly. "string that pulls my short-shorts up my butt crack" is not for comfort or athletic performance. but they want it to be the "right" kind of attention so it's not "being noticed" that matters, it's "who noticed?" they are pleased if the right people stare and offended if the wrong ones do. whether you are a creep or a compliment depends on how they view you, not on what you did. this is not complicated. that's the whole tension.

100% self inflicted wounds. This term has been a disaster from day one. The one positive thing is immigration and the ham handed engagement with the commie disruptions was also a mess.

Endless coal trains--150 cars long--are constantly feeding China's power plants. The generated electricity helps manufacture the solar panels later shipped to the West. Panels made with coal, transported on oil-burning ships, installed and called emissions-free. Asia, led by China and India, currently operates over 5,000 coal plants, with almost 1,000 more on the way. The West is doing the opposite. Europe has retired, cancelled or mothballed over 1,000 coal plants. China is building power, the West is dismantling it.

I agree that the cost of living is too high. I also agree that Congress needs to pass a balanced budget. And I agree that Congress needs to cut spending. But the painful truth Republicans don’t want to admit is that cuts need to be made to the *mandatory* spending on welfare and entitlement programs. The math doesn’t lie. We also needlessly spend hundreds of billions of dollars on proxy wars overseas. The Military Industrial Complex needs to be stopped too, but that won’t happen. Democrats won’t touch the budget with a ten-foot pole, and Republicans pretend to care only when it’s election time. Then come the start of their next term, the ball is dropped. If you cared about cutting spending, you would have firmly voted “No” on the “Big Beautiful Bill,” and every bloated CR that adds more to the debt.
The American Dream feels out of reach for too many young Americans. To make life more affordable for families, we need to blow up the status quo in Washington. CUT RECKLESS SPENDING & BALANCE THE BUDGET NOW!

"teachers are underpaid and schools are underfunded" is one the great persistent lies in america. our schools are highly funded, likely the most funded in the world. we pay ~$21k/student. that's $420k/year per class of 20. marke thinks he's going to discover that the teachers are not getting paid. but they are. per grok: PS 307 (Daniel Hale Williams, Brooklyn) budgets about $116k average per classroom teacher (FY26 Galaxy: $3.38M for 29 positions). Citywide median teacher pay is ~$107k. Teachers work ~180 days vs ~250 for private year-round jobs, so equivalent full-year compensation is roughly $161k (before benefits value). and we have not yet discussed their platinum plated benefits and pensions and their absolutely insane levels of job security. the problem is not that schools have no money or that teachers do not get paid, the problem is that schools have no incentive to spend money well and have been captured by teachers unions that place themselves about education. the problem is that the school system itself has become so insane and broken that no reasonable, effective person would want to work there. pay is not by talent, but by tenure. that does not attract the best and brightest, it attracts chair fillers. pay teachers for outcomes and fund kids not school systems and force schools to compete in order to provide a good product and see how fast this gets better. vouchers could fix this in a decade and restore the US school system to uncontested best in world status. it's obvious and it's simple and it takes 0 additional dollars. that's why the creatures union hates it. there is a direct negative link between teacher union strength and literacy. giving them more money will only make it worse. decades of trying that have been an abject failure. it's time to admit once and for all that the DoE and the school system itself is the problem. education is not too important to be left to free markets, it's too important not to be.
Pay teachers what they’re worth and see what happens.
