On Friday evening, Keith Firth, Director of Traffic and Transportation, had the honour of attending the Civic Trust Awards ceremony in Manchester and we are delighted and very proud to say that projects we were representing, Hanover Square and Strand Aldwych, have been recognised with awards. Hanover has been Highly Commended. The judges commented that the scheme ‘is a successful blend of public realm enhancements and architectural place-making which has transformed the site into a modern, varied, and engaging urban environment’. It was a pleasure to work on the project for @CityWestminster and @newwestend and we congratulate everyone involved in its success, including @publica_office, @FMConwayltd, @wsp , TLG Landscape and Withernay Projects (@Rachael_M), with thanks to @lds_architects and the Hanover project team. Strand Aldwych received a Civic Trust Award. The revitalisation of Strand Aldwych began as part of a vision developed by @publica_office & @nrpltd on behalf of @TheNorthbankBID and was delivered by @CityWestminster. It stands as a remarkable demonstration of the influential role urban planning and design can play in transforming communities. The judges commented that ‘the success of this project should inspire other urban planners to prioritise sustainability, accessibility, and community impact in their endeavours, creating spaces that resonate with both locals and visitors alike.' Immense congratulations to @LDADesign, @FMConwayltd, @wsp and @mgrubbstudio. Thank you to the Civic Trust Awards for this incredible honour, and congratulations to all the winners and nominees. #NRP #NRPeople #CivicTrustAwards #CTA24 #StrandAldwych #HanoverSquare

We are finishing off our short educational series about individuals from minority backgrounds who revolutionised the construction industry, with Elsie Owusu - one of Britain’s best-known and most successful black architects whose professional practice has involved projects in various sectors, including residential and commercial architecture. Born in 1953 in Ghana, Elsie is a founding member and was first chair of the Society of Black Architects, runs her own practice Elsie Owusu Architects, and has been a council member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) since 2014. Among her most acclaimed projects are the redesigned entrance for Green Park tube station, the complete refurbishment of the UK Supreme Court and the ‘Low energy house’ at Aden Grove, London, in which Owusu collaborated with the artist Sir Peter Blake. In addition to her work as an architect, Owusu has been involved in urban design projects. Urban design focuses on the arrangement and design of buildings, public spaces, transport systems, and other elements within urban environments. Elsie Owusu has been a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion within the architectural profession. She has worked to address issues related to representation and opportunities for underrepresented groups in architecture. #NRP #NRPeople #NRPCulture #RaceEqualityWeek #ElsieOwusu

Today’s episode of our short educational series about individuals from minority backgrounds who revolutionised the construction industry, is dedicated to Fazlur Rahman Khan, a structural engineer and architect who developed new structural systems for tall buildings. Fazlur Rahman Khan (1929–1982) was a Bangladeshi-American structural engineer and architect, widely recognised for his innovative contributions to the field of skyscraper design. Born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Khan emigrated to the United States and became a naturalised citizen. Fazlur Rahman Khan played a crucial role in the development of the structural systems for tall buildings, introducing the concept of the "tube structure." Some of the notable buildings for which Khan served as the structural engineer include the John Hancock Centre and the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower), both located in Chicago. His innovative engineering concepts and designs have left a lasting impact on the field of architecture and structural engineering. Khan was not only an accomplished engineer but also contributed to education. He taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and his ideas and principles continue to be studied in architectural and engineering programmes around the world. #NRP #NRPeople #NRPCulture #RaceEqualityWeek #FazlurRahmanKhan

Our third episode of short educational series about individuals from minority backgrounds who revolutionised the construction industry, highlights inspiring story of Yasmeen Lari and showcases her truly unique work. Yasmeen Lari was born in 1941, in Dera Ghazi Khan, British India (now Pakistan). Yasmeen was a Pakistani architect and philanthropist who has made significant contributions to the fields of architecture and humanitarian work. In the 1960s, while initially facing resistance from male workers on construction sites in Pakistan due to her gender, she persevered and earned considerable respect within her industry. Overcoming these challenges, she went on to contribute significantly to her field by designing notable housing projects, hotels, and commercial buildings in the sub-continent. Upon retiring in 2000, she took on a new endeavour, founding the Heritage Foundation of Pakistan—a humanitarian architectural group. This organisation focuses on constructing affordable and sustainable housing to aid individuals affected by natural disasters. The ‘Lari OctaGreen’ is designed to have a zero carbon footprint: it uses no industrial materials such as steel or concrete. It is an eight-walled structure made of bamboo panels lined with date palm matting.  Lari's foundation played a crucial role in the aftermath of the floods in Pakistan in both 2013 and 2023, rapidly rehousing thousands of people and providing vital assistance during challenging times. #NRP #NRPeople #NRPCulture #RaceEqualityWeek #YasmeenLari

In continuation of NRP’s short educational series about individuals from minority backgrounds who revolutionised the construction industry, today’s episode is about J.Max Bond Jr. J. Max Bond Jr. was an American architect born in 1935 in Kentucky, US. Max became well-known for his theory on sustainable development and his belief that architecture should strive to embody humanistic values. Bond was a vocal advocate for increasing diversity within the architecture profession. He emphasised the importance of addressing issues of social and economic inequality through architecture and urban planning. His work included: the Bolgatanga Library in Ghana, The Harvard Club of New York City, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Centre for Nonviolent Social Change, the Schomburg Centre for Research in Black Culture, and The Studio Museum in Harlem. Beyond his work in the private sector and academia, Bond was involved in public service. He served on various boards and committees dedicated to architectural and urban development issues. #NRP #NRPeople #NRPCulture #RaceEqualityWeek #JMaxBondJr

This week marks Race Equality Week, and we at NRP are excited to share a short educational series about individuals from minority backgrounds who revolutionised the construction industry. Today our post will feature a remarkable woman – Zaha Hadid, who became well-known worldwide for her unique projects. Dame Zaha Hadid (1950–2016) was an Iraqi-born British architect who gained international acclaim for her avant-garde and innovative approach to architecture. Zaha Hadid revolutionised the architecture industry through her visionary approach, innovative designs, and relentless commitment to pushing the boundaries of what was considered possible in architectural expression. Zaha Hadid played a significant role in the Deconstructivism movement, which sought to move away from conventional architectural norms. Her designs embraced asymmetry, fragmentation, and non-linear shapes, contributing to the broader discourse on postmodern architecture. Hadid's portfolio includes iconic landmarks such as the Guangzhou Opera House, the Heydar Aliyev Centre, and the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympics. These structures not only became architectural marvels but also contributed to the identity of the cities they inhabited. #NRP #ZahaHadid #RaceEqualityWeek
