So many highlights in tonight’s @92ndStreetY @milesdavis Centennial Celebration concert as the “Kind of Blue Band” played the iconic album’s music, honoring without imitating. “Flamenco Sketches” melted listeners in their seats with its lushness, thanks to deep, patiently-placed bass lines of @BusterSOM and pointed, muted and open-horn statements from Dr. Eddie Henderson. @Peeano88 @javonjackson Willie Jones III @donharmusi…what a sextet!
Sky’s the limit with the arsenal of extended techniques and effects, combined with such a high and consistent level of creativity plus the familiarity factor of close collaborators @MegOkura @samnewsome Angelica Sanchez. @ibeambrooklyn the trio summoned sounds well beyond mere violin, soprano saxophone and piano.
Check out Oct. issue @MegOkura Artist Feature (p. 7) and see her at @birdlandjazz tonight (Tue. 10/6) with the Michael Brecker Quindectet (for which she is musical director and violinist) and then tomorrow she's at @ibeambrooklyn with @samnewsome and Angelica Sanchez! – at New York, USA
Multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson previewed the first of four movements to ‘Reach For Tomorrow’, his massive undertaking that has thus far taken 7+ years to present its initial movement. Playing and improvising on literally hundreds of instruments, he presented a sneak peek of the recording’s masterful results to a full Lang Hall @Hunter_College. Many close collaborators of his were in attendance, including Maria Schneider, Martin Wind, Gary Versace, Julian Thayer, Rob Schwimmer and Ryan Keberle who helped present the special event. Here’s hoping he doesn’t make us wait 20+ years for the completion of the final three movements.

RIP Cassandra Wilson (1955-2026), who passed away today at the age of 70. An immediately recognizable vocalist since the mid '80s, the jazz and music world has enjoyed her presence on recordings - from her early and extensive collaborations with alto saxophonist @mbase to her own albums, starting with 'Point of View' (featuring Coleman) and her signing with @bluenoterecords and debut for the label, 'Blue Light 'Til Dawn' to 'New Moon Daughter', etc. - and her concerts, which will forever remain some of the most memorable shows for anyone who had the pleasure of hearing her live. (18 years ago, she graced our Cover, thanks to @SuzanneLorge)

Saxophonist-vocalist @CamilleThurman brought a high-energy performance to @GrantsTombNPS with drummer Darrell Green Quartet featuring….could it be: veteran octogenarian trumpeter Kamau Adilifu (aka Charles Sullivan), one of jazz’ standout trumpeters from the early ‘70s?! A sight and sound for sore eyes! Thanks @JazzmobileNy! – at Manhattan, NY
Centennial tributes c/o @JazzmobileNy to Randy Weston, Melba Liston & Jimmy Heath at @MarcusGarveyPA. One of the best Weston tribute bands showcased in @realTKBlue ARAQ (African Rhythms Alumni Quintet) with Frank Lacy-trombone, Sharp Radway-piano, Alex Blake-bass, Baba Neil Clarke-drums/percussion; followed by Jimmy Heath Big Band led by Antonio Hart (who performed a “Stars Fell on Alabama” for the ages). – at Manhattan, NY
Arguably the best modern day big band vocalist has to be @rgambarini whose extensive work with the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star band sets her head and shoulders apart. Late set Wed. included excellent arrangements of “I’m Glad There is You” (Quincy Jones arrangement), “Satin Doll”,
“’Round Midnight” (Slide Hampton arrangement) +
“Blue ’N Boogie” (featuring an electric, scat duo with trombonist Jason Jackson). – at Manhattan, NY
