REPORT ON THE FLAG-OFF CEREMONY OF THE 2026 CUSTOMER SERVICE WEEK AT NYSC ENUGU STATE SECRETARIAT
Theme: “Going the Extra Mile”
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Enugu State Secretariat, on Monday, 26th October 2026, officially flagged off the 2026 Customer Service Week, scheduled to run from 26th to 30th October 2026, under the theme “Going the Extra Mile.”
The ceremony commenced with the opening remarks by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Oluwakemi Awolowo, who underscored the importance of excellent customer service and urged staff to uphold professionalism, responsiveness, and quality service delivery in the discharge of their duties.
This was followed by the welcome address delivered by the SERVICOM Desk Officer, Enugu State, Mrs. Emilia Eze, who highlighted the significance of the celebration and called on staff to demonstrate courtesy, patience, accountability, and dedication in their daily interactions with customers.
A sensitisation session was subsequently delivered by a corps member of the SERVICOM Community Development Service (CDS) group. Speaking on the theme, “Going the Extra Mile,” the session highlighted its practical application in public service, emphasising the importance of taking initiative, providing accurate information, and making deliberate efforts to ensure customer satisfaction.
The SERVICOM CDS group also presented an educational drama titled “It Is More Than a Job,” which portrayed common customer service challenges and demonstrated how empathy, professionalism, and a willingness to assist can enhance service delivery.
The event further featured valuable contributions from Assistant Directors, who reinforced the need to maintain high service standards and foster a customer-focused culture within the Secretariat.
The flag-off ceremony concluded with an awareness rally involving staff members, corps members, and the NYSC Band. The rally aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of excellent customer service and emphasise the collective responsibility of all personnel in achieving service excellence.
As the Customer Service Week continues until Friday, 30th October 2026, staff are encouraged to reflect on the theme and translate its message into practice by consistently demonstrating a commitment to exceeding expectations and going beyond the ordinary in service delivery.

NYSC KADUNA FLAGS OFF CUSTOMER SERVICE WEEK
The 2026 Customer Service Week of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Kaduna State, has been flagged off under the theme: "Going the Extra Mile."
The programme is aimed at promoting reliability, accuracy and excellence in service delivery.
Declaring the event open, the State Coordinator, Mr. Abubakar Bawa, who was ably represented by the Assistant Director, Deployment and Relocation, Mr. Samaila Haruna, emphasized the importance of accuracy, reliability and accessibility in attending to customers.
He urged staff to adopt systematic approaches to service delivery and to go the extra mile in ensuring customer satisfaction through effective and quality service.
In her remarks, a staff of NYSC Kaduna, Mrs. Zainab Abubakar, explained that going the extra mile entails building and sustaining a strong, cordial relationship between the Scheme and its primary customers - the corps members. She stressed the need for positive attitudinal change among both service providers and recipients, noting that while the NYSC is committed to serving corps members, they also have a responsibility to conduct themselves appropriately and responsibly.
Similarly, the Head of SERVICOM, NYSC Kaduna, Mrs. Chris Nnoli, emphasized the importance of doing the right thing at all times when dealing with customers. She reiterated that professionalism, accountability and commitment to meeting customers' needs are essential to improving service delivery.
The programme featured a brief lecture by members of the SERVICOM Vanguard on strategies for improving service delivery and ensuring customer satisfaction. The session reinforced the need for staff to provide prompt, efficient and customer-focused services.
The event ended with a group photograph, followed by a five-minute rally within the State Secretariat to create awareness on the importance of excellent customer service.
There’s a perception many people have about the NYSC scheme. Some see it as a scam, while others consider it a waste of time.
And honestly, I understand why people feel that way. In a country where graduates struggle to find decent jobs, even after years of education, it’s understandable to question the value of spending another year serving.
But after experiencing it for myself, I have a different perspective to share.
I don’t believe NYSC is a scam or a waste of time. I believe it can be much more than just a compulsory one-year programme.
For some people, NYSC is their first opportunity to leave their home state, experience a different culture, live in a new environment and learn to adapt to life outside what they’re familiar with. Beyond the certificate and monthly allowance, the experience can offer opportunities for personal growth, independence and a broader understanding of the world around us.
Of course, it doesn’t mean the journey will be perfect for everyone.
Has it all been rosy? No. Is NYSC perfect? Absolutely not. And does completing NYSC guarantee anyone a good job or a better life? Unfortunately, no.
But I believe we can acknowledge the flaws in the scheme without overlooking the value that can come from the experience.
One year will pass regardless. While dealing with the challenges that may come with your service year, give yourself the opportunity to learn, explore and make the most of the experience. You may discover something new about yourself or gain a different perspective on life along the way.
As I prepare to sign out in a few days, I can look back on my NYSC journey and say that it has given me more than a certificate. It has been a chapter filled with experiences, lessons and memories that will remain part of my story.
So, when people say NYSC is a scam, I can only speak from my own experience. I understand the criticisms, but I also believe the value of the scheme can extend beyond the challenges and the certificate at the end of the year.
To every prospective corps member preparing to begin this journey, my advice is simple: go in with an open mind. Be willing to learn, adapt to new environments, explore when you can and make the most of the opportunities available to you.
Your experience may not be perfect, but give yourself the chance to discover what the journey can mean for you.
In a few days, I’ll officially be signing out of this chapter of my life. 🥹❤️
Your soon-to-be ex-Corper,
~Mary Ekuri
Here are my observations as a 3months old corp member currently serving in Abuja
1️⃣ The sweetest part of this NYSC journey is solely in NYSC camp; nothing is funny after camp
2️⃣ NYSC uniform has earned me a lot of respect 🫡, everywhere I go, all I hear mostly is “Corper Shun”
3️⃣ 77k sounds very big to the ear but knows this, it’s just a peanut to the pocket
4️⃣ Disappointment is inevitable, people will disappoint you, bank will disappoint you after 77k got paid, and PPA will not only disappoint that one also come with shock ⚡️ with their posting
5️⃣ Abuja T.fare isn’t really has expensive as the whole stereotype of it. All in all Abuja T.fare has sucked out my Allawee😩
6️⃣ Abuja people and minding their business are 5&6. People living in Abuja are just people from another planet
7️⃣ Before life after NYSC, I have seen life during NYSC
8️⃣ Nobody send me money again since I collect 6/7, NYSC uniform has really affected my helping life 😩
9️⃣ “You’re earning 77k and your PPA still pay you” wait till you get to the position before you realize that corpers are broke😩😩
🔟 “CDS is the most unproductive gathering of adults” this is a big lie! My CDS is one of the most productive and networking CDS, I have met people, make lots of friends and in fact CDS is my source of outing
1️⃣1️⃣ Abuja drivers need to do better pleaseeee. Once a cab driver sees you in khaki, just know you’re paying twice the amount.
1️⃣2️⃣. Monthly clearance isn’t talk about enough! God! That biometrics thing can be very very stressful and tiring 😩.
Which part do you think I miss? Comment below and let’s hear from you.

CIVIC EDUCATION: NYSC/KDI SENSITISES 200 CITIZENS ON CIVIC RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN YOLA
As preparations for the 2027 General Elections gather momentum, the NYSC/KDI Civic and Voter Education Community Development Service (CDS) Group, Adamawa State, has sensitised approximately 200 citizens at Yola Main Market, Yola South Local Government Area, on civic rights and responsibilities.
The outreach focused on promoting responsible citizenship, peaceful political participation and credible elections. Participants were urged to shun vote buying, political violence and thuggery, while making informed choices by voting for credible and competent candidates.
The sensitisation also emphasised the importance of active civic engagement and the need for citizens to understand their electoral rights and responsibilities in strengthening democracy and good governance.
With the 2027 General Elections approaching, the initiative underscores NYSC's commitment to promoting civic awareness, peaceful coexistence and responsible participation in the democratic process.
The activity was coordinated by the CDS group's Supervisory Officer (S.O.), Mr Dabara Daniel, as part of efforts to build an informed electorate and encourage citizens to make their votes count.
Together, let us promote peaceful elections, reject vote buying and violence, and vote for credible leaders for a better Nigeria.

NYSC TO STRENGTHEN COMPLIANCE WITH SAFETY STANDARDS
The National Youth Service Corps has restated its determination to increase its safety measures by maintaining safe and healthy working environment that would further protect staff, Corps Members, visitors, and government properties.
It said the Scheme would continue to identify occupational hazards, assess risks, prevent workplace injuries and illness, protect the environment, and comply with relevant safety standards.
The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu stated this in his address at the maiden edition of the Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Schedule Officers Workshop, held in Abuja.
He said the workshop theme; "Preventing Workplace Hazards and Creating a Safe Environment in All NYSC Formations", underscores the importance of workplace safety, occupational health and environmental sustainability to effective administration and effective service delivery.
Speaking through the Director, Human Resource Management, Mr. Nura Umar, General Nafiu added that all NYSC formations should prioritise regular workplace inspections, risk assessments, proper maintenance of safety equipment, fire drills, first-aid preparedness and emergency response procedures.
"We must therefore move beyond reacting to incidents and embrace a proactive safety culture', he said.
The Director General tasked the workshop participants to translate the knowledge acquired to identify hazards and assess risks, promote continuous safety awareness and set clear action plan and renewed commitment that would make every NYSC formation safer and healthier.
The Director, General Services Department, Mrs. Yetunde Baderinwa, said the workshop signalled an important step towards establishing a coordinated and sustainable approach to occupational health, safety and environmental management throughout NYSC formations.
She stated further that the safety of all NYSC officials, visitors, service providers and other stakeholders must remain a collective responsibility.
Participants at the workshop include all Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Schedule Officers from the 36 NYSC State Secretariats and the FCT.
