We have this new paper, led by Meghna Goyal, which provides the first global view of inequality in the agri-food system. We find that agricultural production has increasingly shifted to the South, but income is increasingly captured in the North.

It costs up to $50,000 to keep someone homeless in jail. It costs $8,000–$20,000 to house them through Housing First. This new study shows what happens when we invest in people over punishment.invisiblepeople.tv/the-cost-…

The US #LandSqueeze in a graph. As farm sizes climb, the number of farms continues to fall.
When farmland is concentrated into fewer and fewer hands, #food becomes commoditized and uniform. Rural communities are hollowed out.
Diverse foods rely on diverse farms.
The number of farms declined again while the average size of a farm continues to tick up. @USDA_ERS

I feel it daily now as the old world breaks down more -- and we gather with those who are helping a new world to be born.
A quiet revolution has been underway since the late 1960's. It involved people seeing where the globalized system was heading through the ecological lens of pollution, limits to growth, and structural patterns of colonial extraction.
In the 1970's there was an explosion of planetary consciousness as more people began to see images of the Earth from space. We could see for ourselves that everything truly is connected. There were millions of us then. It is more like a billion now.
We have explored sustainability, regeneration, permaculture, local economies, and so much more. Yet all of it seemed to be failing because the world has been dominated by exponential growth of the extractive systems.
Yet all of that is coming to an end now. There isn't much left that can be raped or pillaged. The empires of the Holocene have all collapses with the exception of a desperate few. And increasingly people are realizing that they need to organize locally in order to restore health and harmony to their own watersheds.
This is the deeper meaning of "back to the land" as we discover our bioregional nature as human beings. More of us are realizing that we need to organize human societies that are respectful toward and act in service to the continuation of life on Earth.
Last week we began a six-month learning journey called "How to Organize Your Bioregion" and have people joining us from the continents of North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia. It isn't fully planetary yet, but is moving in that direction.
You can be part of this movement. Perhaps you already are. Simply look within your own heart and ask what could give you meaning and purpose as the old world dies around you.
Then find the others. Come together and practice restoring health to ecosystems and human communities. Now is the time. Let's do this.
Onward, fellow humans.

A win for quilombos! 💪
The Afro-Brazilian community Quilombo de Bombas has the legal title to its #lands after decades of fighting. This opens a precedent for the nearly 500 quilombos throughout #Brazil, which remain officially unrecognized.
