My book cover was designed by a Dominicana, the author photo was taken by a Dominicana, the audio book is being read by a Dominicana. @Flatironbooks rocks! Thank you @shedesignsbooks for featuring Adalis Martinez's work.
We love this design by Adalis Martinez. Besides being an amazing cover, in keeping with the idea of immigration @Flatironbooks sought out Adalis, who like the main character, was born in Dominican Republic and moved to NYC at a young age. Beautiful, meaningful work ♥️ #ownvoices

Sad news. When I first moved to Michigan @Salon published my personal essay on seeing snow for the 1st time. It was my 1st pub as a new tenure track asst. prof. You made that cold winter a little warmer. Thanks for all you did. You will be missed.
Today, after 31 years, we are saddened to announce that Salon is ceasing publication. It has been an extraordinary privilege. salon.com/2026/11/05/goodbye…

This week I realized many in #Kolkata are afraid of donating blood. Folks, it doesn’t hurt you! We should do this periodically as good citizens. The demand in #India far exceeds supply. If you want to do something for others that won’t cost you anything, consider donating blood.

Today is the 105th birth anniversary of India’s greatest filmmaker, Satyajit Ray. Last month I spoke to Heather Bigley, host of the podcast Voiceover: Movies That Move Us about my favorite film. #satyajitray #worldcinema Charulata: Silence and Subtext youtu.be/bWV6pOER_aM?si=B5VU…

Saw him perform live in Grand Rapids two days ago. He’s quite the showman too. This is beautiful.
A #songofcomfort for anyone who needs it.

A little bit of my childhood about to be lost forever.
Kolkata’s iconic tram system, since 1873, is nearing its end as the Govt. plans to discontinue most routes. Kolkata—India’s last city with a functioning tram system—will now only keep one route operational. A thread of images from the golden days of #KolkataTram 1/18

Someone could be going through their darkest time in life. Then they see a film, listen to a song, read a book, hear a comedy routine, or see a painting & suddenly in their darkness appears a light. I don’t care how hard the business is don’t give up on your art! It holds power
