Lies work by mimicking true statements, by blending in with and imitating truths. But there have to be truths to mimic and blend in with, and they need to have characteristics, qualities, which people recognize, or think they do. And therein lies the problem for Big Deception now. The truth supply has fallen so low, the ability to discern it is so diminished, and its classic hallmarks so disagreed upon, that convincing fakery is harder to pull off. The inauthentic requires the authentic or it has nothing to model itself upon and no receptors in our minds and hearts to stimulate falsely and then capture. When information is information is information is iinformation the deceivers have no advantage over the chatterers -- everything is chatter, static, hum -- and the liars' leverage goes away. So that, I imagine, is the project now for those who would reign by deception in the future: resurrecting truth, the sense of truth, a body of truth with mass social respect. It's why they keep pushing the notion of "consensus," of truth as broad agreement among experts, among the licensed, acclaimed, and certified. Truth by force of numbers, truth by chorus, so the sense of the genuine lives on for the disingenuous to abuse. I wonder if it can work. Memories of reality, of the natural, and what it looks like, sounds like, feels like, are fading fast. Councils of worthies pledging to agree on things feels to me like a temporary fix, a mechanical method from the last age that already has reached its limits and collapsed. What the liars will need to revive the game, I think, is nothing short of a vast new revelation. A visitation from a god or force capable of commanding awe and reverence. Something that doesn't persuade but towers, shines. Watch out for this, this awesome coming forth. Watch out for signs of its approach. Behind the scenes a great object is being fashioned, a commanding, radiant idol, I suspect. Will it be a machine transcending all machines? Will it appear as a being? A group of beings? Will it come in the form of a breakthrough, a eureka? You'll know if that stirs those old feelings you've grown numb to. If it suddenly brings those deep, lost, primal shivers. Beware of miracles, is a way of saying this. Beware of supreme astonishments. Of marvels. They're coming. And they won't seem like tricks at all. In fact, that's how you'll know them. They'll feel like the end of trickery. Like truth. At last and final. Like all you'll ever need.
