Everyone fails their first sales job.
My 1st startup failed becsuse I had no sales skills.
Missed my own quota as “CEO” by 100%
Lost deals I should have closed.
Chased prospects who were never buying.
Here’s why we all suck at first:
We think selling is about talking.
It’s about listening.
We pitch features.
Buyers want solutions to problems.
We chase everyone.
We should qualify hard.
We celebrate meetings.
We should measure outcomes.
Took me six months to figure it out.
LinkedIn wins for:
•First impressions
•Networking reach

Resume wins for:

•Formal applications
Make me a book of business analyser for tech account executives @LovableBuild
Naval Ravikant said minimise the time between thought and action
The more you wait
The more the friction builds up

Day 35 of @amznsellerhelp not doing anything to help us and stealing our money
I wonder how long it will take for amazon to give us our hard earned money back
I am not sure why Amazon treats smalls business like this
This shouldn’t be acceptable by any measure @amazon
We got charged the wrong storage Fees on February 4th by Amazon
They still have not refunded us…
They tried to charge the wrong amount again in March but our bank declined as we didn’t have enough balance
We can’t chat with support our account is suspended @amznsellerhelp
Hi @amznsellerhelp we been asked to put in a credit card to get charged the wrong amount again so we can resolve our issue…..
That’s absolutely ridiculous. Why are you doing this to a small business and making our life so hard for no reason
Most people looking for a job are lazy
This is a huge problem in the market today
Applying to hundreds of roles on easy apply
Creating bland AI cover letters
Using the same resume for every job app
Then when they don’t hear back after 100 random applications
They are frustrated and blame a tough market
Unfortunately tools like LinkedIn and AI have made the bar too low
But there is some good news
If you are willing to be put in the work
You will be rewarded greatly
It is easier than ever to stand out with real effort and thoughtfulness
Here is basic examples
Writing a cold email to the hiring manager
DM recruiters on why you are a great fit
Create a 1 pager about how you will add value and send it to leadership
Do these things and you will be in the 1%
So next time you are ready to blame a tough tech market for the silence
Be real with yourself
Be very honest about your approach
Are you being lazy ?
Because if you are putting in real FOCUSED effort
Doors will open
You will not get ghosted
Offers will come in
Effort is becoming rare
Be rare

The reason why 70% of you get rejected in interviews according to a new Forbes survey…
Not showing you have
1. Emotional intelligence
2. Coachability
Here is 3 fail proof methods to show you have these traits (#3 is my favorite)
But let’s start at the beginning
You are probably answering questions in interviews the wrong way
Answering without a structure.
If you don’t make your answers clear
People will be confused if you have these traits
If you use structure
Your articulate answers will make you a star
Some of my favorite methods:
1. STAR method
situation, task, action, and result (Amazon’s favorite method)
2. PAR method
Problem, action, result
Focuses on a well defined problem
3. Sher (this one is my favorite)
Situation, hurdle, endgame, reflection
Situation = set the scene
Hurdle = describe your challenge in detail
Endgame = how you solved the challenge
Reflection = what would you do differently and what have you learned for the future
This is the best technique
It shows you have the emotional intelligence to understand problems deeply
And that you are coachable and looking for continuous growth
What other methods do you have find powerful ?
Comment to help sellers looking for their next role
Does your tech sales resume look like this?
2020 - Company A
2021 - Company B
2022 - Company C
2023 - Company D
Struggling to find the right company to sell for ?
It’s not your fault:
- when OTE is unattainable
- when they over hire in your territory
- for unrealistic top-down quota
Here is what you can do in your next job search to vet companies on their promises
1. Use tools like RepVue to see what’s being said by other sellers
2. Reach out to Ex-sellers (ask them why they left)
3. Read Crunchbase and CB Insights reports
What else would you add to this list when it comes to vetting a company ?
236,000. 550,000. $2 trillion
3 numbers you should know if you are in tech sales
236,000 is the number of layoffs in tech in 2024
550,000 is the total number of tech sales jobs expected to be created in the next decade
$2 trillion is the amount of spend companies will do on AI and SaaS by 2032
So why should you care about these numbers?
Because the market for tech sales is growing tremendously
The spend from companies on tech is growing at a MASSIVE rate
The combination of these two things mean one thing
YOU shoul NEVER just settle for a role in tech sales
You should be selling tech that
A. Can give you massive comission checks
B. You believe in

Recruiters will know all your numbers and achievements before even getting in touch with you
3. Crunchbase
Understand founding rounds and total money raised
Leadership highlights and investor highlights
Which other tool would you add to the list ?
546,000 is the number of new tech sales jobs expected to be added to the market in next 5 years
3 things to know before getting your next tech sales role
1. The market is growing
No matter how tough it may seem sometimes
This is a growing market and the need for tech salespeople is increasing
2. High earnings potential
Some AEs will make $1M dollars this year selling tech
If you want a profession with a lot of upside
Tech sales is for you
3. Lots of promotions
If you want to become a sales manager or VP
You will find some of the youngest sales leaders in tech sales
NEVER do this when looking for a new role in tech sales
Apply to 100 jobs on LinkedIn easy apply
DO this instead
1. Create a list of 20 companies you find interesting
2. Examine their product market fit through tools like repvue and general research
3. Reach out to a salesperson already working there on LinkedIn
4. Create a 1 page plan on what value you can bring to their team
5. DM the plan to the hiring managers/recruirers there
This is so MUCH better than applying to 100 random sales roles
What else would you add to the list ?
ALWAYS ask these questions in tech sales when joining a new company
1. What is the average attainment across the team ?
2. How many sellers over performed vs under performed ?
3. What is the average deal size ?
4. What is the quota ?
5. How long is the sales cycle ?
Getting the answers on these questions is critical
What other questions would you add to this list ?
Tell me in the comments
Are you born a seller or can you learn sales?
A question as old as times
If you believe that sales people are born naturally good at sales
You may be right
But GREAT sales people have earned their greatness through learning
Even if you have natural ability
Those who become the best at their craft
Always do it with intention and knowledge gathering
So next time you think you will never be good at sales
Do the following
1. Identify gaps you have
Can be prospecting or negotiating
2. Find knowledge like courses or free information on the topic
3. Learn by doing and making mistakes
Do these steps over and over again
I guarantee you will become elite at sales
But then again
This is the process to learn anything in life
If you are in tech sales here is 3 metrics you must consider before joining a new company
1. Product market fit
This one is tough to measure from the outside but not impossible
Tools like RepVue and reviews can give you some hints
I was using DeepL almost daily before joining giving me all the confidence about their product
2. Territory
Some territories are immature
Some are mature
But you can only grow a book of business as fast as your specific territory will allow it
Understand which territory you are getting
Then
Create an attack plan accordingly
3. Leadership
You need to be constantly feeling like you are the dumbest person in the room
But safe enough to make mistakes
This means you are LEARNING new things
New skills equals higher income potential
Choose your leaders wisely and accordingly
