At Malala Fund, we work to secure stronger education budgets and make sure girls have a say in how that money is spent. In Bauchi state, Nigeria, 17-year-old Sharon got to have her say. At a workshop organised by @YoungLeadersN, with support from Malala Fund, Sharon sat alongside government officials and education leaders to share what girls actually need from education budgets. And she's proud to know those leaders took her ideas seriously. Girls like Sharon aren't waiting to be heard. They're already helping shape decisions about their education. 💚

Economists have a term for things that can make or break a country’s economy: macrocritical. It’s applied to food costs, oil prices and exchange rates — but rarely to education. Across 113 countries, governments now spend more on debt than on educating their children. Our new brief makes the case that education — girls' education above all — is macrocritical and details how policymakers can better protect it from the debt squeeze. Young people are often invited to conferences, summits, and leadership forums, but are they being prepared to lead or simply encouraged to participate? According to the National Population Commission, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), more than 70 percent of Nigeria's population is under the age of 30. Yet many young people remain excluded from leadership and public decision-making. While the Government has introduced programmes such as the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) and youth digital skills initiatives to promote entrepreneurship, skills development, and leadership, the question remains: Are these opportunities translating into meaningful participation and influence? Leadership is more than attending a forum or completing a training. It is about having the confidence, skills, platforms, and opportunities to influence decisions, solve community problems, and hold institutions accountable. As Civic Wire marks #InternationalYouthDay2026, we look beyond participation to ask what it truly takes to move young people from the audience to the decision-making table equipped to strengthen Nigeria's democracy and shape a more inclusive future that advances the Sustainable Development Goals. . 50 years after Soweto, too many African children are still denied the basics. A child shouldn't miss school because there's no safe toilet. A girl shouldn't lose learning days because she can't manage her period with dignity. WASH are not luxuries, they are rights #DAC2026 #DAC
