I changed ONE word on my paywall button. Purchases went up.✅
Everyone says "Start your free trial" is the best paywall button.
I tested it against a plain "Continue."
"Continue" won. Not by a little.
Here's the data, and what I think is actually going on 🧵👇
The numbers
Old version: button said "Start my free trial"
• 19.5% of paywall viewers opened Apple's payment sheet
• 12.1% bought
New version: button says "Continue"
• 27.9% opened the payment sheet
• 14.4% bought
That's 43% more people willing to try paying.
Why I think "Continue" wins
"Start my free trial" sounds like a commitment. It's a phrase people have learned to fear, because a "free trial" so often means a surprise charge.
"Continue" just feels like the next step in the flow they're already in.
But here's the key part 👇
I didn't hide the trial. I moved it.
Right above the button is a simple timeline:
Today: free
Day 5: we remind you
Day 7: billing starts
And right under it: "7 days free, then $29.99/year. Cancel anytime."
The button doesn't need to sell the trial when the screen already answers the scary question: "When will I get charged?"
The other thing I found: people decide in ~6 seconds
I measured how long people stay on the paywall.
The ones who never tapped a plan left after a median of 6 seconds. A quarter left in under half a second.
They're not reading your feature list. They're glancing, seeing "pay," and leaving.
So the first glance is everything.
What I'm shipping next
A green badge right under the headline:
✓ Free for 7 days · Cancel anytime
The trial is visible in the first second, and the button stays a calm "Continue."
Honest caveats
• This wasn't a clean A/B test. The new version also had a redesigned paywall layout.
• The new version had a smaller sample (312 vs 1,204 paywall views).
So treat it as a strong signal, not a law of physics. But it's enough for me to stop assuming "Start your free trial" is automatically best.
Takeaways for app builders✅
1. Test your button copy. Don't just copy the "best practice."
2. Fear of surprise charges is the real enemy. Answer "when do I pay?" on screen.
3. Your paywall gets about 6 seconds. Put the most important line where the eye lands first.
4. Measure time on screen, not just taps. It tells you why people leave.
I'll share the results of the badge test in a couple of weeks.

Tiny Meta ads sauce 👇
Relaunched Meta ads for my iOS app this week and almost lit money on fire.
The campaign looked perfect in Ads Manager. It would have reached ~3,000 people.
Here's what I learned 🧵
8. Goal for the campaign: not cheap installs. Cheap paying users.
A $1.40 install that converts at 12% beats a $0.90 install at 4%.
Days 1–3: don't touch it.
Day 7: cut losers, keep winners.
Scale only after 2 weeks of profitable cost per trial.

They’re working while I was sleeping.
