This is such a tiny piece of limestone but still an absolute favourite - a wee Loxonema gastropod sat on top of a bryozoan that is lying on a crinoid ossicle, which is on top of a brachiopod fragment! Rocks are awesome. 330 million years old from Fife, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

It’s awesome that something so delicate can last 310 million years and still look this beautiful 🌿 this is Neuropteris, an extinct seed fern from the Scottish Coal Measures of Fife 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Just seen some super photos with useful captions on our OUGS Facebook group - it looks as though it was a super interesting trip! – at Bons-en-Chablais, France
Great field trip to Hopeman today, in collaboration with @scottishgeology and led by our very own Dave Longstaff. Superb examples of soft sediment deformation in Permian wind-blown sands.

#Stirling Castle sits on natural ramparts made of volcanic rocks. They pushed up through the softer Carboniferous sediments, which have since been eroded. 6,500 years ago sea levels were higher, and these were islands in a firth reaching far inland. 1/3 #scottishgeology

In 1852 Fife had a ‘gold rush’! Gold was found in the Lomond Hills, inspiring thousands to flock there in search of fortune. Unfortunately, the gold turned out to be pyrite ‘fairy balls” 😅 it was named the 'fools’ gold rush' & it ended as quickly as it started! #mineralmonday

May 5, 1818, birthday of German philosopher Karl Marx. His thoughts on #economy & #society may well known, but Marx was actually also interested in #geology & copied some geological drawings, like of the basalt cliffs of Staffa, Scotland
Gorgeous slice of carboniferous stromatolite under uv light 🖤

The Falkirk Tunnel is 630m long - making it the longest canal tunnel in Scotland 😊 it’s an awesome walk and you get to see some Carboniferous geology, as well as stunning flowstones that have been forming since it was built 200 years ago 🖤

Since Hutton's Section in Holyrood Park is currently inaccessible, here's a fine example of the same relationship between Carboniferous sedimentary rocks and a dolerite intrusion. Hound Point, Dalmeny estate west of Edinburgh. Actually, this one's better than Hutton's Section!

Did Old Man of Coniston yesterday. Expected the copper mines but didn’t expect industrial archaeology on the slate industry on such a big scale so high up the mountain.

The island of Ailsa Craig may be of little interest, if not for its peculiar #geology and the strange #Olympic sport known as #Curling 🥌 forbes.com/sites/davidbressa…

If you are interested in Scottish volcanic rocks (of course you are), do make the effort to visit fresh coastal exposures in the Weaklaw vent, East Lothian. Amazing energetic late-Carboniferous pyroclastic material including bombs and spatter, with extensive later metasomatism.

It's 200 years this month since the word Palaeontology was first used! It means 'study of ancient life', and was used by Blainville in January 1822. #FossilFriday #fossils #palaeontology
