Iowa suffers from the second-highest cancer rate in the US and is one of only three states where the rate is rising. The role of “Big Ag” has become a political lightning rod amid what is being described as a public health crisis. For the first time, tackling the environmental causes of cancer has been included in Iowa campaign platforms for both parties. Republicans and Democrats up and down the ticket have staked out positions vowing to take on the issue. And this year, nearly $30 million has been spent airing more than 100 campaign ads in Iowa that mention cancer, according to AdImpact data. In the last midterms in 2022, there was just one, backed by a little under $200,000. Inside the cancer crisis rocking Iowa's midterms races, w/ @owermohle: cnn.com/2026/10/24/politics/…

A great reporter who was an essential read at a scary time, a fierce competitor whose scoops I feared, and a very nice person to boot. I admired how Helen always put the "public" in "public health" — her deep care for helping people understand what matters and why. RIP.

Helen checked in on me a couple of months ago when she saw I was on medical leave. She didn’t miss a thing. She was the same kind of journalist as she was a person: brilliant, thoughtful, critical, & incisive. I am so sad we'll no longer read her wit & wisdom. But I'm saddest of all that we won't get to meet up in Ottawa. Truly one of the greats 💔 statnews.com/2026/10/13/hele…

Deeply saddened by the passing of @HelenBranswell, a journalist of integrity and professionalism. Throughout her career, Helen demonstrated an unwavering commitment to evidence, science and truth, helping the public understand some of the most complex and consequential health challenges of our time. At a moment when misinformation competes with facts, her reporting was a trusted source of clarity, honesty and insight. We at @WHO were privileged to work with Helen over many years, whether through one-on-one interviews or the hundreds of press conferences she attended during COVID-19 and beyond. Her questions were always informed, thoughtful and fair, reflecting a deep commitment to helping the public understand the facts and their implications for health. On behalf of WHO, I extend my sincere condolences to Helen’s family, friends and colleagues. She will be greatly missed.

Since the first media reports, @WHO has been actively following up on the reported death of a laboratory worker at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute in Irkutsk oblast, Russian Federation. The individual died on 2 October 2026 after being hospitalised with severe pneumonia. Initial media reports suggested pneumonic plague following an alleged accidental laboratory exposure. In response to WHO’s verification request under the International Health Regulations, the Russian health authorities reported that no case of plague had recently been registered in Irkutsk oblast. They informed WHO that an epidemiological investigation had been conducted, preventive and control measures implemented, and identified contacts placed under medical observation and tested. They reported that no high-threat pathogens had been detected among the contacts and that medical observation of all identified contacts had been completed. WHO has remained in contact with the Russian health authorities and has offered technical support. WHO has requested further information to clarify the cause of the severe pneumonia, the pathogen that prompted the public health measures, and media reports of a second employee with pneumonia of undetermined cause. Timely, complete and transparent information sharing under the International Health Regulations is essential to clarify conflicting reports and enable an accurate assessment of potential public health risks.

BIG MAHA SUMMIT today at Waldorf-Astoria. RFK Jr and Vance will speak. I was denied a press credential due to “limited space.” Here I am, having been turned away. I’m 5 feet tall. I don’t take up that much space.

NEW: The Navy is working to rename an aircraft carrier that was set to honor a Black sailor hailed for his heroic actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USS Doris Miller. It’s unclear what the Navy is seeking to change the name of the carrier to, though two sources said there have been internal conversation about renaming it after President Donald Trump. The Navy is looking instead to rename a different warship after Miller and is recommending him for the Medal of Honor. w/ @PamelaBrownCNN cnn.com/2026/08/20/politics/…

Meet Natalie Harp, the aide so close to Trump she once rode in an SUV trunk to accompany him “As the motorcade idled outside his Trump Tower residence, staffers confronted a more immediate problem: There wasn’t room for Harp, the hyper-loyal aide whose devotion to Trump had quickly entrenched her within his orbit. A screaming match in the lobby ensued, with Harp insisting that Trump had personally asked her to attend the court appearance, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Denied a seat but determined not to be left behind, Harp jumped into an SUV trunk, according to the two sources and confirmed by a photo obtained by CNN.” W @adamcancryn cnn.com/2026/08/18/politics/…

NEW: Trump is considering removing Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for the District of Columbia, over a Justice Department conclusion that problems with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool stemmed from a flawed renovation rather than vandalism, two people familiar with his thinking told CNN. The president is “furious” with Pirro, one of the sources said, telling CNN that he fumed about her all weekend. They added that based on his criticisms of her, they find it “highly likely she’s removed from her job.” cnn.com/2026/08/03/politics/…
