Lagos, Nigeria, October 22, 2026.
The Nigeria Network of NGOs (NNNGO) has released The Economic Impact of Nonprofits in Nigeria, an evidence report quantifying the economic contribution of its Present in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, the membership carries a combined annual operating income of at least โฆ๐ญ๐ญ.๐ณ ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ผ๐ป (approximately โฆ12.5 billion across the full membership). With supply-chain and wage effects applied using a conservative 1.4 multiplier, the total annual economic footprint is estimated at โฆ16.4 โ 17.5 billion, with a plausible range of โฆ14 โ 22.5 billion.
โNigeriaโs nonprofits are not merely providers of social services. They are serious economic actors, employers, customers of local businesses, and generators of further activity across every state,โ said Oyebisi Babatunde Oluseyi Executive Director of the Nigeria Network of NGOs. โWhile the limitations of the data are real and the figures may not capture the full scale of the sector, what this report offers is the start of a national conversation on the true economic impact of the nonprofit sector. It signals the economic footprint of the sector and is a true reflection of where Nigerian nonprofits are creating both social and economic value. Recognising and measuring this contribution more fully is the first step to resourcing civil society in proportion to the value it creates.โ
The report draws on four evidence bases: the NNNGO membership database; an inventory of nonprofit and civil society events held between 2023 and mid-2026; a verified review of Nigerian university programme pages; and documented member impact features mapped to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Key findings include:
๐ฆ ๐๐บ๐ฝ๐น๐ผ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐: 3,100 โ 6,900 full-time-equivalent paid posts, plus volunteer effort equivalent to roughly a further 2,700 posts. The paid workforce is drawn in part from a pipeline spanning 13 universities and five academic disciplines, although no Nigerian university yet offers a dedicated nonprofit-management degree.
๐ฆ๐๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ผ๐บ๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: Significant recurring demand for hospitality, aviation, catering, transport, printing, professional services, commercial space (estimated โฆ1.3 - 3.2 billion annually) and near-universal telecommunications and internet services. Events alone generate an estimated โฆ0.9 - b2.7 billion in annual local spending.
๐ฆ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐: Education-focused organisations hold the largest pool of resources at โฆ4.84 billion. Advocacy organisations are the most capitalised on average (โฆ3.67 million).
๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐๐ ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐: Documented member impact features address 12 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with local organisations frequently serving as the last-mile delivery mechanism that neither government nor the market reliably reaches.
The report is explicit about its limitations. Budgets are self-reported in bands rather than audited, the open top band is valued at a conservative floor, and the data covers one large network rather than every nonprofit in Nigeria.
Almost every limitation identified points toward understatement. Yet even with these caveats, the evidence signals a clear economic footprint and accurately reflects the areas in which the sector is generating both social and economic value. On top of the measurable market footprint sits social value - in education, health, livelihoods, inclusion, democracy and the rule of law that cannot be fully reduced to a monetary figure and adds to, rather than competes with, the economic case.

October 13, 2026, Abuja, Nigeria โ In a significant milestone towards strengthening civic space protection in Nigeria, @NhrcNigeria in partnership with the Nigeria Network of NGOs, and with support from @hbsNigeria and
@UNOHCHR successfully held a one-day Train-the-Trainer workshop in Abuja to equip participants disseminate, apply and monitor the Advisory Opinion on Promoting and Protecting Civic Space and Human Rights issued by the Commission on May 18, 2026.
The workshop equipped Thirty-seven (37) NHRC State Coordinators and designated civic space focal officers with the knowledge and practical skills to disseminate the Advisory Opinion, address civic space challenges at the state level, and promote consistent implementation of recommendations on civil society regulation, freedom of association, peaceful assembly, and human rights protection across states.
The workshop produced 37 trained and certified NHRC State Coordinators to lead cascade trainings on the Advisory Opinion within their respective jurisdictions. Standardised training materials, including a Trainerโs Manual, session plans, handouts and a participant workbook, were also developed and validated to support consistent dissemination of the Advisory. Within 90 days, the 37 trained and certified State Coordinators are expected to engage government agencies, security institutions, civil society and the public to promote the Advisoryโs implementation, while a common monitoring tool will help track civic space incidents and law enforcement conduct around peaceful assemblies nationwide.
The Nigeria Network of NGOs worked with the the National Human Rights Commission in developing the Advisory Opinion, which was issued on May 18, 2026 to promote, protect and stregthen civic space and human rights across Nigeria.

How many times have you entered your phone number online, filled a form, registered for an event, or shared personal details without thinking twice?
Now imagine that information getting into the wrong hands.
That is exactly why the FG introduced the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
The law provides a framework for how personal data should be collected, processed, stored, and protected, while giving individuals rights over their personal information.
For civil society organisations, this responsibility is particularly important. NGOs routinely collect sensitive information from beneficiaries, staff, volunteers, donors, and communities. A misplaced file, unsecured database, or careless disclosure can expose people to privacy risks and undermine public trust.
Data protection, therefore, is not just about compliance. It is about trust, accountability, and responsibility.
This week Civic Wire explores why protecting personal information must become part of how responsible organisations operate.

Your Nonprofit Has a Mission. But Does It Have a Future Beyond Its Leaders?
For years, one person has held it all together.
The vision. The relationships. The institutional memory. The big decisions.
Then, one day, they leave.
And suddenly, the organisation is asking questions nobody prepared to answer.
Who takes over? Who knows what? Who keeps the mission moving?
This is where succession planning comes in.
Leadership transitions should not be the moment your organisation starts searching for its next chapter.
The golden rule? Build the next generation of leadership before you need them.
A strong succession plan identifies critical roles, prepares potential successors, determining required competencies, assessing current talent, developing future leaders, and monitoring the plan regularly -ย even when its leaders move on.
Your mission should outlive your leaders.
The future of your Nonprofit deserves more than a last-minute handover.
It's time to Shape. Safeguard. And Sustain.

A great Nonprofit can have a powerful mission and still struggle when its Board and Executive Director are not on the same page.
The Board provides governance. The Executive Director leads management. Both must work together to move the mission forward.
Some golden rules every Nonprofit leadership team should know:
1. Govern, Donโt Micromanage.
The Board provides oversight. The ED manages operations. Respect the difference.
2. Communicate Before It Becomes a Crisis.
No surprises. Keep communications open, honest and timely.
3. Trust, But Hold Accountable.
Give the ED room to lead while maintaining clear expectations and accountability.
4. Disagree with Respect.
Healthy debate strengthens decisions. Personal conflicts weaken the mission.
5. Put the Mission First.
Beyond titles, personalities and power, the organisationโs purpose must remain the priority.
Good governance is not just about having a Board. It is about building a BoardโED relationship that works.
October 5โ9, join the biggest Nonprofit Network in Nigeria where development leaders will explore the practices that shape, safeguard and sustain civil society organisations.

An organization policy just sitting in a folder does not create good governance.
Boards must understand their policies, review them regularly and most importantly - use them.
The real test of governance is what happens when difficult decisions have to be made.
Decisions such as:
๐Who has the authority to decide?
๐Who provides oversight?
๐What happens when there is a conflict of interest?
๐How are risks escalated?
๐Who is accountable?
Clear policies help answer these questions before a crisis arrives.
Here's a governance question for your Board:
"If your NGO's Board had to demonstrate its governance framework today, would your policies provide clear answers?"
As we gradually move towards Board Governance Week 2026, move beyond having policies on paper - Build structures that support ethical leadership, accountability, transparency and effective decision-making. Review your organisation's existing Board policies. Identify the gaps. Update what is outdated. Clarify what is unclear. And ensure every Board member understands the responsibilities attached to their role.
Good governance does not happen by accident. It is designed, documented, practised and strengthened.
