'Ipswich Docks.' (1950) John Nash developed a keen conviction early on for everyday subjects which would serve to feed almost his entire output. Docks and quays are subjects he returned to time and time again.

'The Wharf at Cookham.' (1936) Stanley Spencer had no source of income except painting. His landscape work was readily saleable, it gave him a rest from making large religious pictures and helped refresh his vision by renewing his contact with nature.
