Who would've thunk it? Rear-ended twice in one week, and apparently this time I didn't get to walk away completely unscathed. I've totaled more cars than I care to admit and somehow emerged from accidents without so much as a sprain or broken bone—leaving insurance adjusters and junkyard owners scratching their heads, wondering how I walked away, much less continued living. I never went to the hospital afterward because I tended to dismiss these things as trivial inconveniences. And because I hate hospitals. PERIOD. I'm also refusing to walk around in a neck brace now. I don't particularly feel like explaining myself to everyone I encounter or inviting the inevitable “OMG, WHAT HAPPENED?” every twenty feet. But this was different. This was unexpected, out-of-the-blue collateral damage landing on top of a collision/crash course of medical mishaps that began in 2023 and apparently hasn't finished with me yet. The timing couldn't possibly be worse. I've always credited exercise and weight training with keeping my body strong enough to survive everything I've put it through—and everything that's been done to it. Right now, I'm more grateful for that than ever. And when I say my life is hanging on by one screw, I am no longer speaking metaphorically. The proof is in the X-rays. So far, the imaging shows three compressed cervical vertebrae and loss of the normal curvature of my neck; a fractured collarbone where the seatbelt apparently took the brunt of the impact; and, down at L4–L5, two screws from previous spinal surgery—one of which appears to have come loose. Conclusion? I don't know yet. More doctors. More imaging. More opinions. And hopefully my auto insurance comes through, because the man who hit me wasn't insured. What I do know is that I am absolutely not prepared to contemplate another round of operations at this stage of my life. If there is a medically reasonable way to opt out of more surgery, believe me, I'm listening. Once upon a time there was, and once upon a time there was not... How does one continue managing everything—and somehow do it with aplomb—amid chaos, absurdity and seemingly perpetual trauma? Apparently, one screw at a time.
