It was a bad idea then. And is a worse idea now. No point tom-tomming 4th largest economy if you’re going to behave like the 153rd (which is our per capita gdp ranking by the way)
UPA2 reduced LRS limit from $200k to $75k due to the 2013 crisis. In 2015, it was increased to $250k.

The curious case of the shifted voter- they go off from one electoral roll and don’t appear anywhere else!

When the census numbers come out, we will know what an epic level of disenfranchisement has happened in Bangalore. The adult population is expected to be roughly about 1 crore and only 60 lakh will be voters.

Reality check for the "Iphone is being manufactured in India" crowd
Very interesting actually. Apple keeps about $450 of every $1000 you spend on an iPhone.

Back in the day, kids went outside India to study for their Masters. Then it moved down to undergrad programmes. Now it’s moved down further to 9th standard! This is an ad in today’s ET

The sheer arrogance. In 2014, there was no LTCG on equity, recipients were not taxed on dividend, debt funds held for >1year were treated as long term and taxed at 10% and surcharge was 10% only for incomes over 1 crore. Every single one of these has been increased substantially

Welcome to the world of Indian politics..
Trump set the precedent by offering every adult $5K if the Republicans win the midterms. What if the Democrats raise the stakes for the general election in 2028 by promising to give every adult who earns less than $70K per year (70% of the population) $25K if the Democrats sweep?

Paid TCS on LRS in May 2025..Got the refund on October 1st 2026.. Government got interest free money for 11 months and paid 3% interest for 6 months...If TCS paid is more than income tax due, citizens should at least be paid interest from the date of TCS

We are watching the unintended consequences of three policy decisions in real time -1)terrible taxation policies for non equity financial assets 2) warped TCS on LRS remittances and 3) capping the overseas investment by Indian mutual funds at $7bn (a cap set in 2007)

The Tata saga is a true Indian innovation - a hostile take over without spending a single Rupee..
A number from today's Business Line that tells you who the Tata freeze is actually hurting. Because the AGM collapsed in August, Tata Sons cannot adopt its accounts or pay its FY26 dividend. ₹4,474 crore, sitting still. thehindubusinessline.com/com…

For the last few months, we saw the positive benefits of the Altiva hybrid long short SIF over arbitrage funds. Now in September we get to see the downside: -0.68% return vs +0.4-0.5% for arbitrage funds. I'm still sold on it though.

Some NPR podcasts started getting mysterious comments on Spotify. They made no sense to the staff reading them – until someone from a younger generation cracked the code. Hear the story: link.podtrac.com/phns92ui

Investigative journalism is still alive in India
The Election Commission of India is under fire like never before. The SIR has struck 13 crore names off draft rolls, putting the EC at the centre of intense public debate over its role in deciding who gets to vote — and who doesn’t. HOWEVER, what nobody knew: through that same period, some of the sharpest questions were being asked from inside. Out today, after months of work. Our #ExpressInvestigation 🧵 (1/10)

TIL that the total number of PMS accounts in India(not unique investors) is a measly 2,20,000. When asked to guess, I was off by an incredibly wide margin.
