Never knew that,Jim.
From memory, I think that ATV chose to take their cameras to watch Derek Hales make his debut for Derby. So that epic night at VP was never seen on TV. I was 14 and on the Holte that night

Another stylish @AstonVilla player. Not true that Saunders only rated hard nuts.
My good friend Alex Cropley who passed away recently told me about playing in the game where they beat Liverpool 5 - 1.

I can still see Brian Little skinning Joey Jones on the right wing that night. What a player Brian was. Very sad when he retired prematurely.
Nine-year-old me was there, and it was the day I became a devout Villa supporter. Can’t tell you how happy I am with the club right now.

@patmurphybbc coming up 12 months Pat do you miss working on Saturday it feels still feels strange tuning into the world service through ABC News radio and not having you covering the midlands

1976. Six months later Liverpool - Keegan et al - won the European Cup. I took a notion to get in a cab with my flat mate from the Pebble Mill studios after Midlands Today - paying on the night - and within half an hour we’re on the Holte End. Happy days!
I remember that night in 1975 Pat. Such a shame the cameras weren’t there to witness it too

Best @AstonVilla performance I’ve seen was the 5/1 demolition of a formidable Liverpool in Dec 1976. Power, pace & deadly finishing. Ran them ragged. This Villa squad have the potential. So refreshing to see the ball played upfield at speed, compared to the focus on possession.
And Saunders revamped an excellent side after losing Cropley,Little Gidman and Gray. Emery is longest serving manager since Emery as well which is a wild statement considering it was over 42 years since he left.

Pace throughout a team is invaluable. Suzuki’s passing is tremendous - quick team-mates capitalise on that. The Faffing About Quotient is thereby reduced. Mercifully!
No higher praise!

The revamped @AstonVilla is easier on the eye than in recent seasons because they have pace throughout the side now. Suzuki’s passing an upgrade on Martinez, who orchestrated too much possession stuff in his own half. Now they get the ball forward quicker. Like a Saunders team.

I agree with you about Parky - but in the modern world of light entertainment, with the pr machine over-mighty @grahnort is supreme.

I still pine for peak Parkinson, when interviews ranged from the likes of Peter Sellers to Jacob Bronowski to Matt Busby, with the occasional music special from the likes of John Barry and Henry Mancini. Plus the guests ordinarily weren't blatantly plugging their latest project !

Claudia Winkleman soon found out what a tough job it is, hosting a chat show, trying to instil order amid the chaos, while teasing out decent anecdotes from the guests. Norton remains the best at it.
Agreed 100%. Worth saying every so often just what a brilliant broadcaster @grahnort is, making something that is actually really tricky look ridiculously natural and easy.

Thought @grahnort was a brilliant host on his chat show last night. Struck the perfect balance between respect for Prince William’s EarthShot project, while joshing him whimsically, bringing in the other guests skilfully & interacting with the audience cleverly. Made it look easy.

Again, I agree with Ian.
That is an entirely different type of broadcast. The friendly banter works well on TMS. or on studio sports panels. The news is a rather more serious proposition.

Agree with you and @ianDarke Radio Fab FM with Smashie and Nicey, and their great mates Clem with the weather and Izzy on the sports desk, is hollow, chummy pap. BBC, ITV and Sky take heed

I always thought ‘inform’ was the important part of the broadcasting mantra ‘inform, educate, entertain’. Even if my expert summariser was a friend, give their full name, to avoid listeners wondering ‘who was that?’
In terms of my point on nicknames that's banter between friends - we listeners and viewers don't know them as mates. In fact, they are not our mates but broadcasters.

Two of the finest sports broadcasters in the last 40 years. Listen to them, they're absolutely correct.
Couldn’t agree more. An insidious trend that’s developed momentum over the past decade. They’re not there to be chums with viewers/listeners but, hopefully,to enlighten them. Far too cosy, across TV and Radio,

Lamentable - @itn introducing reporters by their christian names as if they are our bosom buddies, as in “ coming up, we will get Robert’s view on all this”. This is the news not ‘ The Chase’ or ‘ Strictly’. Robert who ?
