Falling Slowly
I'm heartbroken to hear of the passing of Glen Hansard. His music has been the soundtrack to my life for as long as I can remember.
This was one of the very first pieces I shared here during the Covid pandemic. I remember how nervous I felt posting it. Not long afterwards, I received a message from Glen himself telling me he loved my version. Those few kind words, coming from an artist I admired so deeply, meant more than I can say. They gave me the confidence to keep sharing my music, and they played a significant part in the path that followed.
So many evenings were spent lying on the floor of my cottage beside the fire with my dog Nisha, listening to Glen's songs. I still can't quite believe he's gone.
This is Falling Slowly from the film Once. Glen and his co-star, Markéta Irglová, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008.
The world feels quieter today. My heart goes out to his family, his friends, and to everyone whose life was touched by his music. I'll be listening to his songs for the rest of my life.
Loch Lomond, from the west of Ireland.
Wishing Scotland well as they return to the World Cup after 28 years 🏴
I don’t know what she was watching, but having her beside me made playing cello outside in a field in Mayo feel a little less strange
I’ve started going back through old cottage videos and keep finding Nisha there beside the music.
Here she is on the left, close by as always, while I play a slow version of Turlough O’Carolan’s Bridget Cruise.
Cello, garden, sunshine, and the small black dog who was so often part of it all.
Last week, we said goodbye to our beautiful Nisha.
She came to us as a rescue, after being found as a stray, and became a deeply loved part of our family, and part of the music too, appearing quietly in so many of the cottage videos.
Thank you to everyone who noticed her, asked about her, and loved her from afar.
The music in the video is called “Nisha”, it's a melody we used to sing it to her at home during Covid lockdown, and I later recorded it on my album Solace.
She was deeply loved. We miss her so much
Happy St. David's Day! 🏴
Happy St. David's Day 🏴 Over 1400 years ago, at the time of St. David, a Welsh mother sang to her baby Dinogad. Her song was found written in the margin of the 7th century Welsh heroic poem Y Gododdin. The Welsh lullaby 'Dinogad's Smock' here played on viola da gamba #GwylDewi
The Wexford Carol, music from 12th century Ireland, the oldest Christmas Carol still sung today. Happy Christmas from the west of Ireland 🎄
Thank you for your kind comments, you can listen to my full recording of The Wexford Carol here: linktr.ee/Patrickdexter?utm_… Merry Christmas 🎄
