Episode 947: Patrick and Melissa Mason New Book: “Rooted: Centering Christ in Everything”
My friends @patrickqmason (Holds the Leonard J. Arrington Chair of Mormon History and Culture at Utah State University) and Melissa Mason (Clinical Social Worker, Master of Social Work, Utah State University) join us to talk about their new book called “Rooted: Centering Christ in Everything”
The authors share that too often, Latter-day Saints have centered their religious lives on rules, worthiness, obedience, institutional loyalty, and cultural expectations rather than on Jesus Christ Himself. They invite readers to rethink what it means to be a disciple of Christ—placing greater emphasis on grace, compassion, love, belonging, and the transforming power of Jesus Christ.
Their message isn't that commandments, covenants, or Church participation don't matter. Rather, these things should point us toward Christ, not become substitutes for Him. They offer practical suggestions to bring Christ the focus of our church talks, lessons, conversation—and in all aspects of our lives.
This is a super powerful podcast to help all of us better focus on Christ. Thank you, Melissa and Patick, for being on the podcast. I encourage everyone to read their book as we work to become a more Zion people.

What does it mean to be a peacemaker? Check out my debate with @patrickqmason where I argue for a peace grounded in virtue or rule of right reason.

I support @NDFootball skipping the bowl game. It has nothing to do with not wanting to play, let alone being scared of, BYU. It has to do with a broken college football system where non-playoff bowl games are utterly irrelevant remnants of a former system that no longer exists.

Go see this movie!
The story of Helmuth Hubener, a Mormon youth who defied Hitler and was the youngest resistance fighter to be executed. Seems more timely than ever. Who here knows this story?

I just got back from watching the new @AngelStudiosInc movie “Truth and Treason,” the story of one of my personal heroes Helmuth Huebener. It’s honest, inspiring, and devastating. An absolute must-see.

How the LDS Church addressed the Michigan shooting in the opening session of General Conference: by not focusing on it. Instead, the church honored President Nelson’s legacy by emphasizing how to make peace. religionnews.com/2025/10/04/…

This morning, I described how blessed it is to be a peacemaker and how peacemaking begins in the most basic place: in our hearts, then in homes and families.
As we practice there, peacemaking will spread into our neighborhoods and communities.
Peacemakers are sometimes labeled naive or weak from all sides. Yet, to be a peacemaker is not to be weak, but to be strong in a way the world may not understand.
