Digging into AWS S3's new Glacier Instant Retrieval storage class pricing. Total cost of uploading (many) small objects, transitioning to Standard-IA or Glacier-IR, then expiring/deleting after 6 months. Standard ends up cheaper than either of those for objects under 200 KiB.
Someone made a cool “how much shelf space does X bytes in 3½-inch floppy disks use?” calculator site, but I can't find it now. Anyone remember, or better at searching than me?
For the record:
“I have [deleted] 4.1 petabytes. This much data would need 10,088.7 km (or 6,268.8 miles) of shelving.”

Keyboard stopped working on my Arch Linux ThinkPad with latest kernel. Mouse/touchpad not working on my FreeBSD ThinkPad. At this point if Apple makes a 13” or 14” computer with a proper keyboard I’ll buy it and go back to macOS.

TIL the ephemeral storage for AWS Fargate (e.g. a production service spooling user data to /tmp in a container) uses unencrypted EBS volumes. Not encrypted at rest 😬 Surprising, given EBS trivially supports encryption.
