In January 1998, 26-year-old Icelandic electrician Felix Gretarsson was repairing a power line atop a utility pole when he accidentally grabbed a live wire, sending 11,000 volts through his body. He spent the next three months in a coma. When he woke up, he learned that both of his arms had been amputated. Struggling to cope with the loss, Felix turned to alcohol and drugs. Years of addiction nearly cost him his life, severely damaging his liver and leaving him needing two liver transplants to survive. Then, in 2007, he met French surgeon Jean-Michel Dubernard, who had performed the world’s first successful hand transplant. Felix asked whether a similar operation could give him arms again. The possibility gave him something to work toward. He moved to France and spent years waiting for a suitable donor. In January 2021, almost exactly 23 years after his accident, Felix became the first person in the world to receive a double-arm-and-shoulder transplant. By 2022, he said he could brush his teeth, dress himself, and drink from a glass—everyday tasks he had spent decades unable to do with his own hands. His daughters were just four years old and three months old when he lost his arms. By the time he could finally wrap his arms around them again, he was a grandfather.

In 2011, a New Zealand man fell on the nozzle of a high pressure air hose; it pierced his left buttock & rushed air into his body at 100 lbs per sq inch. He survived, but was inflated "like a balloon" to twice his normal size with the air separating his fat from his muscles & compressing his heart.
