Names like Babatunde, meaning “father has returned,” and Yetunde, meaning “mother has returned,” reflect this cultural idea. In some Igbo communities, ịlọ ụwa, meaning “returning to the world,” describes the belief that a deceased ancestor may return through a newborn in the family. Similar beliefs have also been documented among the Urhobo people and other African tribes and even beyond Africa… Yet, many Christians believe in resurrection and eternal life rather than reincarnation, while mainstream Islamic teaching also rejects reincarnation and teaches resurrection and an afterlife. So here’s what I want to understand: If our ancestors had their own explanations of life after death, why should we automatically dismiss those beliefs because a different religion teaches us otherwise? Why should eternal life be considered true and reincarnation false? Is it because one has stronger evidence, because we have faith in a particular holy book, or simply because that’s what we were raised to believe? And before anyone says our ancestors were ignorant, remember that believing something is ancient doesn’t automatically make it true, but neither does calling a belief traditional automatically make it false. What makes one explanation of life after death more credible than another? Do you believe in eternal life, reincarnation, both in some form, or neither? Let’s debate. 👀
