RIP IAN DICKSON
Sad to learn that rock photographer Ian Dickson passed away on Tuesday 20th October at the age of 81.
Perhaps his best-known photograph for Bowie fans was the one that graced the cover of the 1973 re-issue of Decca’s The World Of David Bowie. Here’s Ian talking about how he got his first Bowie exclusive...
“Taken on 7 January 1973 with the connivance of Bob Brown, Newcastle City Hall's manager. Bowie's management had put a freeze on any unofficial photography, so, with the help of a steward's armband, a torch and instructions to be ''discreet'', I was able to capture Ziggy in all his glory and got my first ever scoop!”
Several of the images from the show were used elsewhere over the years, including on magazine and book covers, including the first image here which appeared on the cover of Disc magazine before Decca licensed it.
In 1995 Ian published a box of prints from the show called The Jean Genie, which included a couple of shots from the same venue taken in 1972. Read all about it over on the brilliant Bowie resource which is Bowie Wonderworld: bowiewonderworld.com/trading…
Ian also photographed Bowie live in 1976, 1977 (with Iggy) and 1990.
Our thoughts are with his wife Shoko, his children, and anybody else who was close to Ian.
