I’ve been covering this story for a big chunk of the summer/fall. With this feature, I wanted to focus on what it’s like for the vendors to experience this treatment
California decriminalized street vending. LAPD is still citing vendors in MacArthur Park. Vendors say LAPD is using 41.18 to harass them. Now they’re part of a fight to repeal the anti-camping law entirely. lapublicpress.org/2026/10/la…

Israel/Palestine is seen as a foreign policy topic unrelated to LA city leaders jobs, but it affects everyday ppl, and shows up in things like this lawsuit related to the LA Public Library. Here's an interview between the authors, touching on that: lithub.com/why-we-are-suing-…

Even aside frm ethics of running ads paid for by the Israeli government—or any government—that aim to tourism-wash violence & illegal expansion, this highlights a blurred line btwn our newsroom & LA Times Studios, which functions as both marketing arm AND shadow newsroom of sorts
The Los Angeles Times is running a full webpage advertisement promoting tourism to Israel. The ad is backed by the Israeli Ministry of Tourism. The ad also includes a map of Israel that erases Palestine.

Cornell Police Report Omitted Student’s Claim She Was Raped Documents obtained by The New York Times show that the campus police at Cornell University sent a condensed statement to a prosecutor, who then declined to bring charges. At a campus police department on Nov. 14, 2024, a Cornell University sophomore detailed how she found herself naked in a fraternity house nearly a month before, with a “ring of men” around her. She was drunk and had been given ketamine, she said. Her phone was across the room. “There was really no escape,” she said. The woman spoke for hours with an officer, telling him how what began as a consensual sexual encounter with a man she liked spiraled into a prolonged drug-fueled attack by seven men inside the Chi Phi fraternity house. “I don’t remember the very end of the event where I was raped,” she told them. “I can say with 100 percent confidence I was raped.” The officer then condensed the interview into a six-page “voluntary statement” written from her perspective, according to documents obtained by The New York Times. The student, after leaving about 20 handwritten corrections on a draft, signed a final version the next day. nytimes.com/2026/10/01/nyreg…

Just to be clear, the Los Angeles Times is not doing this. L.A. Times Studios -- a side company our owner runs using our branding for all kinds of ads, sponsored content and non-journalism that we have no input in -- is.
