The oldest surviving, purpose-built petrol station in London is the East Sheen Service Station (now a Texaco) located at 567 Upper Richmond Road West in East Sheen, SW14. Built around 1926, it is a protected Grade II listed building recognized by Historic England as one of the earliest examples of an American-style filling station in the UK. The station's unique historical significance lies in its design, which was one of the first in the country to place the sales office and fuel canopy under a single roof.
In 1926, the price of a gallon of petrol in London averaged about one shilling and sixpence which is equivalent to 7p in modern decimal currency. The price of a gallon of petrol today is about £7.30.
