When I hear people say “People with disabilities don’t use our web site”
Most often I tell them “that’s likely because people with disabilities can’t use your web site.”

Following their introduction to Romania in the late 1970s, Kent Cigarettes grew in popularity due to them being used as a rather foolproof bribe in the domestic market of the Communist country. However, as Romania slipped into an economic crisis and the living conditions for people became increasingly dire, the cigarettes were withdrawn from circulation and only officially sold in hard currency shops which were out of bounds for most Romanians. However, the black market was in full boom and inflated prices for these cigarettes flourished. Smoking cigarettes, however, was not the primary reason for obtaining them....
In 1980s Romania, an unopened pack of American cigarettes was worth more than money. Behind the display windows of state-run grocery stores in Bucharest, shelves stood desolate, lined with nothing more than jars of pickled cucumbers and industrial vinegar. Nicolae Ceaușescu’s communist regime had plunged the country into forced austerity to pay off eleven billion dollars in foreign debt, rationing bread, meat, electricity, and heating. Yet in hospital corridors, auto repair garages, and municipal offices, an unofficial economic lifeline emerged that completely bypassed the national currency, the leu. It was the white-and-blue pack of Kent cigarettes. In a society where holding foreign cash meant years in prison and domestic banknotes bought virtually nothing, an American tobacco brand became the most trusted currency in the republic.
The cigarette economy was the direct result of a financial trap engineered by the state. Under Decree 210 of 1977, private possession of Western hard currency—such as US dollars or West German marks—was strictly criminalized for ordinary Romanians, carrying sentences of up to ten years. Meanwhile, domestic banknotes had lost their meaning. Central planners fixed the prices of consumer goods, but because virtually all food and manufacturing were exported to harvest foreign exchange, store shelves were bare. Having a wallet full of Romanian lei could not buy meat, warm clothing, or a car battery if none existed on the market. In this vacuum, citizens required a substitute currency that was portable, durable, and universally trusted. Western tobacco had originally been imported for foreign tourists in state-run Comturist shops. While brands like Marlboro were familiar, Kent—specifically the white pack with the Micronite filter—captured the country, transforming from a luxury smoke into an indispensable parallel currency.
In daily life, Kent functioned with the precision of a central bank. A single pack acted as a small bill, while a carton of ten packs—known as a cartuș—served as a major banknote. Crucially, almost no one actually smoked them. Lighting a Kent was considered an act of financial madness, the equivalent of burning cash. Instead, citizens smoked harsh domestic brands like Carpați, preserving their Kent packs strictly for transactional leverage. The cigarettes unlocked services that official money could never secure. In freezing hospitals where penicillin and sterile needles were scarce, slipping a pack of Kent into a nurse’s pocket guaranteed clean bedsheets or pain relief, while handing several cartons to a surgeon ensured an urgent operation. Outside the clinic, a carton of Kent secured a mechanic's labor to replace a broken Dacia alternator, persuaded a butcher to retrieve meat from a locked back room, or convinced a housing clerk to expedite an apartment transfer.

Had an "interview" for a blockchain project last week.
Camera was on, we're chatting, and the guy tells me to clone a GitHub repo and run it locally before we go further into the technical round.
I said sure, but first can you do me a favor
hold up 3 fingers in front of your face for me real quick.
He froze.
Didn't move.
Just sat there for a few seconds before the call cut off and he blocked me.
That's when I knew. A real interviewer doesn't glitch out over a random ask like that. A deepfake/AI overlay does.
These "run this repo" scams are getting scary common in crypto and dev hiring right now.
The setup is always the same:
- flattering DM
- real-sounding project
- rushed timeline
- a "quick step" before the call
that's really just remote access or a credential stealer in disguise.
If someone wants you to run code or install something before you've even had a real conversation, that's the whole scam.
Trust the instinct. Stay safe out there.

Just had the creepiest scam ever happen 20 minutes ago.
I got a call from my wife telling me she forgot her wallet and needed the credit card to pay for her gas.
Except my wife was at home with me, and drives a Tesla. Same voice, bit... off, weird cadence but 100% sounded just like her. If she wasn't there, and it wasn't about gas I would have fallen for it.
I entertained it for awhile to get more out of it, I was so confused. Must be some sort of voice deepfake. The responses were too fast for ai, I think it was a voice filter. I wish I had thought to record it.
The future is about to get fucked. Warn your loved ones, do verbal passwords with your kids.
Bit taken aback

> stray cat follows us home, wife wants to keep it
> last week of our trip spent changing hotel rooms every day because cat has fleas
> cat throws up and shits all over me on train back to Cusco. Throw my clothes away b/c cat excrement everywhere
> bribe airline employee to let us take cat on plane back to US. Cat throws up & diarrheas everywhere on plane as well
> get cat home to our apartment in Miami. Cat gets fatter and fatter over coming weeks
> assume it’s just b/c has access to good food for first time
> wake up to strange noises coming from our closet. Cat has multiplied into a 8 cats
> kittens are cute but mama cat is ruthless and keeps stashing kittens in random places in the apartment
> google it, turns out kittens need to eat every 2 hours or they die. Mama cat is trying to off half her litter
> not on my watch
> next few weeks wake up every 2 hours 24/7 to:
>> search apartment to find the kittens stashed under couches / inside shoes / most absurd places
>> weigh each kitten to figure out which ones haven’t eaten
>> hold mama cat down and force her to let the runt kittens eat
>> try to go back to sleep for an hour, then repeat
> all 7 kittens survive but my wife and I go borderline insane from sleep deprivation
> try to get them adopted. No one wants the kittens
> successfully peddle a few off on friends & family. Have to take multiple flights to different cities just to deliver kittens
> 2 yrs later we finally get all the cats out of our lives
2 years of my life I will never get back
I’m also now allergic to cats
NEVER, EVER let a woman in your life pet a stray cat

I never realized that drones would bring us into the disco warfare era
Russian forces have reportedly fitted a UAZ-452 “Bukhanka” vehicle with mirrored panels as a potential countermeasure against drones using optical or AI-assisted guidance.
The improvised modification appears intended to interfere with the drone’s ability to visually identify and track the vehicle by altering its appearance and creating reflections.
